I think burning them out is a little impractical as the are roughly a foot across and three foot tall and there are at least forty of them

Hard graft I'm afraid. Dig out around and underneath the tree, saw off the roots and pull it out.
You could always try wrapping a chain around the stump and the other end on a 4x4 or tractor and pull it out that way. You would still have to dig out though.

Pay someone to do it, I've done it and it's back breaking work.

Ste is your man if you want to pay someone to do it. He's a Man City fan though which is never a good thing mind you.

This is your best option. I've seen one in action and they are quite quick and very effective

If you need it done immediately, by all means seek professional assistance. However, if you'd prefer to save the money and do it yourself, I'd recommend doing a search for epsom salts and stump removal. It takes a while, but if you're like me and hate paying anyone to do anything you can do yourself, it's a viable alternative. I've cleared acres using the stuff.
