I'm far,  far too young to have seen Yogi Broadbent play,  but a bloke I used to work with many years ago told me about how as a youngster he would go down to OBV and watch the players train. After everyone else had finished the drills,  Yogi would stay out by himself, and hammer a ball into the old concrete dugouts and as it ricocheted back to him he'd hit it first time into the other and carry on like this for 15 minutes. Boom,  boom,  boom,  boom. He said he'd never seen a player hit it as hard.

I think everyone on this board is too young to have seen him if he played in 1693.

Steve Wignall? Really?

He's got a few votes as well. At least I didn't have to agonise over this one. Peter Kitchen by a country mile for me.

Warboys for me.  In his 2nd spell he was my favourite player.

Warboys certainly deserves to be there. A proper  "mester". I think it was in 1981 when Warboys was playing in defence that I saw him and Tony Cunningham having a 90-minute ding-dong at Sincil Bank. The contest, like the game, was a score-draw and the two walked off arm in arm at the end.

A shame that Tony Cunningham had shot his bolt by the time he played for us. He was a proper footballer, just like Alan Warboys.

Tough one.

Big Bren was my first Rovers hero. I know he didn't have the pizazz of Kitchen, but he had as good a scoring record and played the thankless line-leader job. And he had a stronger overall career than Kitchen, playing 6 seasons in the top flight (which was unheard of for a Rovers player in those dark days and which on its own marks him out as the best of the era) and being a full international.

So on balance, Big Bren for me.

Whoever's put that list together needs to have another word with some old heads by the way. Steve Wignall, Archie Irvine and Brian Usher in before Mike Elwiss?

Yup. Three of the worst players, Billy, of that era that I can remember. Brian 'I can run fast but can't cross for toffee' Usher; Archie 'I hit a screamer once and never stop trying to repeat it' Irvine and Steve 'I really want to be a centre half' Wignall.. Next to useless all three of them.

As for Mike Elwiss - he was specifically bought by Palace, from Preston, to be a part of what was billed as the 'Team of the 80's' under Terry Venables.  A real quality player.

I remember seeing Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley at BV in the early seventies. They sat a few rows in front of us in the main stand. Rumour had it that they came to have a look at Mike Elwiss. As I recall he had a bit of a mare that day and they went after about 70 minutes. Not long after that Elwiss signed for Preston.

I think he married the daughter of the Preston chairman and when his career ended he went to work in the family business.

A fairly recent article about Mike Elwiss and his career at Preston. An interesting read.

I voted for yogi. He was a true character and with his passing skills and ability to hit a ball would be worth a fortune now.
I remember one game (possibly Bradford City at home in the league cup)
when we were worried Alick wasn't playing. Yogi ran the game and scored both goals as we won.
Ps Alan Hale was an American actor, we had Alfie for a few seasons.
Rumour had it that he was seeing Colin Booth's missus. We'd have been better letting Alfie go than Colin.

Before my time still this lot - but from what I hear laurie sheffield, peter kitchen, colin clish and brendan o'callaghan were all very good players! I am stabbing in the dark but I'll probably go for kitchen or sheffield! I bet warboys will be on the next list too!

Thank youi John. I've never seen anything about ME in print before. It's a good read.

Ch-Ch: Mike Elwiss was 2 or 3 years above me at Danum. In his last year there we used to see, quite regularly, the sports master there, a chap called Mr Bruce, loading him up with a back pack full of concrete (well, conceptually it was concrete anyway) and shouting encouragement as Mike relentlessly pounded up and down that quite steep bank in the middle of Danum's sports field. We all knew he was going to the Rovers at the end of the school year.

Cheers

Again, very tough to pick. On balance, over and above my 2 favourite players of their time in Usher and Warboys, I'm going for Peter Kitchen. He played for longer and produced some magical moments and went on to prove he could do it at a higher level.

Gosh! I never knew that ch-ch. I don't think any of us mortals knew tbh. I've no idea where it came from but we were all convinced he was going to BV. Maybe it was kids and their fantasies...  I don't know.

I'll have to go check what division Coventry were in at the time. I think it was probably a little after their rise to the top under Jimmy Hill?
