Car

Just wanted to know if anyone could recommend a suitable car retailer for 2nd hand cars in the Doncaster area. Preferably near the Dunscroft area. Or if anyone currently has a car for sale. Looking for my first car so only actually wanting a 1 to 1.3 litre engine car. Replies much appreciated. Only looking to pay up to £1,000.

£1000 isn't going to get you much from a second hand car dealer, you're better off trying a private seller, there's usually small cars for sale in Dunsville at a house near enough opposite Barriecars.

Failing that try the auctions

Find examples of the cars you could afford and then find some insurance quaotes.  those could easily exceed the £1000 for a car

I'd recommend a 1.2 corsa if you can find one.. (avoid the 1.0 litre model).
Decent, reliable little cars, ok on insurance. Should get one for a grand on about a 2001 reg. You'l probably have to buy private though. Look on auto trader site but avoid high mileage ones.

Amate of mine owns Fleet Direct on Wheatley hall Road.
He often has some decent "runners" that he takes in as PX's.

Don't buy off a dealer. If you've only got £1000 you definitely need to be buying private to maximise your money. Bear in mind a dealer will charge you 20% VAT. A private seller won't. A dealer has overheads. A private seller doesn't. Take a knowledgeable person with you to do the basic checks, oil, exhaust fumes etc. With a bit of common sense you could get a decent car.

Use Auto Trader. That is far and away the best source of finding what you want. If you get a Corsa there will probably be a fault with water coming into the passenger and maybe driver's foot well. I can point you in the right direction of getting it sorted for £50.

Avoid anything French or Italian. Anyone that owns a car from either country obviously didn't do any research before they parted with their money. The French and Italians haven't got a clue how to make a decent car. My recommendation would be a Nissan Micra. The Japs are easily the best manufacturer for the type of car you're after.

Vat not applicable to used cars, unless classed as a qualifying car which at £1000 is highly unlikely !!

Try Ashton at ART Motors on Barnsley Road, opposite the new Tesco Local.  He's done a few very good deals for people I know (admittedly a few 000's more than you are looking to spend) but he has access to a lot of low price cars.

Ive bought a car from that bloke (Fred) in Dunsville . Hes a genuine mature guy who's retired but enjoys doing up cars for a hobby. He's got a tidy looking Ford Focus up for sale today for only £995. Not sure on engine size but worth a look.

Slightly different topic, but does anyone know any local garage who will buy cars off you? I want to get rid of mine but can't really be bothered selling it privately and know that We Buy Any Car and others of that ilk will just knock down the price on the website by about £500.

It's a 2007 red Honda Civic, 1.8 petrol. I've had it just over 2 years which is a long time for me to have a car and I'm fed up with it now!

I suppose it all depends what kind of money you want for it, it's worth about £2400, depending on condition, milage etc.

They are generally on Auto Trader for £4-£4.5k, but that's dealer prices so obviously a bit high. It's only done 73k miles so fairly low for the age, in decent enough nick for an 8 year old car. I've been offered £3200 on one of the car buying websites which I'd be happy with but like I said, I know I'd get there and they'd just knock it down. Where you getting your £2400 from? I don't think I'm being massively optimistic with what I'd like for it but that seems a bit low.

Try ringing Ultima Cars at Denaby, 0170 9863471. My brother in law and his business partner own it. They might take it off you, not promising anything mind you but worth a go.

Cheers for that, a guy at work got offered £600 for his old Mondeo part ex, did a bit of leg work and sold it to a garage in Swinton for £1400 so I know it can be done, it's just whether I can be arsed!

I sold my Leon on ebay.  Didn't really want any hassle and to be fair it was a nice straight forward transaction.  Make sure you are clear with your terms of sale and payment and set a realistic price and you should shift it.

Aren't there any budding entrepreneurs on this forum?

There is a great opportunity to make about £1000 for anyone with a bit of go in them.

Buy the car off DaveDRFC for about £3000 then sell it for about £4000.

Easy money. I'd do it but I've already got more money than I know what to do with.

Just seen a vauxhall corsa sxi for sale for £895. Its on a 54 reg and its at the garage opposite Tesco in edenthorpe. I don't know anything about the garage (I suspect he just lets people use his forecourt to sell their vehicles) so take someone with you who knows about cars. The price is right enough though.

You're probably better off private Mr 91, you'll get a better deal that way.  I've bought cars private and through dealers and with a dealer you can get a good deal if you time it right.

I'm in the same position as Dave and will be looking to get rid of mine pretty swiftly aswell.  Only ever sold private and part ex before, any other tips people?  Any buying garages in the Doncaster area anyone would recommend?

Sell private. End of. Dealers will always rip you off.
