Island Games
« on June 29, 2015, 04:22:29 pm by Guernsey Exile »
Anyone been paying this any attention.  Its in Jersey this year with competitors from Falklands, Greenland, Alderney to name but a few.

Does anyone on here have a particular affinity to the competing nations?

On the football front i expect Gibraltar to take Gold with Guernsey taking Silver.

I've been to the Falklands (and Ascension), lived in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles) for 3 years and have relatives in the Isle of Wight, but I have never heard of this competition - looks well organised from their website.

I have to admit Guernsey, i don't know hardly anything about the games, does it get televised because i can't remember ever seeing it?.

It gets a little highlights coverage but nothing live.
It's the pinnacle of sporting careers for the locals here, very few make it any higher.
Examples that I can think off the top of my head are Heather Watson currently.

In the past though there have been sporting success with le Tiss, Andy prialux and an equestrian bloke from Sark

We had two channel islanders on our books in the mid-90s. Can anyone name them?

Had me clapping in my ringside seat, in the lounge, she did. Got me all emotional she did.

Here. Exile. These Island Games. How does qualification work? Is it population based? Area? Would the Isle of Man be eligible? Te Isle of Wight? Australia? New Zealand? Ireland? The smaller Japanese islands? What happens if an island is part of a bigger political territory? What about that island in the middle of Sandall Park lake where the swans always used to nest?

Cheers!

Official website says "small islands".  Which raises all sorts of League of Gentlemen images.

Given that I work in Buxton, I might put forward the idea of a World Championship for Small Towns Currently Unaffected By The 21st Century.

Buxton would piss it.

Vera Brittain's hometown that is Billy. You leave Buxton alone :)

Not entirely sure on qualification. The thing is Gibraltar isn't an island! Alderney is in the Bailiwick of Guernsey but enters separately where Herm doesn't.

Wiki has all the info. It's quiet intriguing.

Final day of competition today and Guernsey sit 4th in the table. Then jersey hands over to Gotland for 2017

I've only been to Buxton twice. Once passing through it on a school trip. The other time was on a scorching day in 1975 watching Clive Lloyd score a ton and Lancs rack up 450-odd. On the Monday there was no play due to snow!

In Buxton they think League of Gentlemen is a documentary.

Guernsey finished fourth overall with jersey topping the table.
