Screeching (and grunting)Tennis Players
« on July 08, 2015, 09:11:16 am by Donnywolf »
Yes there is a thread about Sharapova already but it has degenerated as lots do

I only saw a bit of Sharapovas match yesterday and after a couple of games I turned off (well over)
. What she does is distracting and I guess can be off putting for her opponent.

She is not alone in the womens game and some of the men have their male equivalent "grunt" or roar. I think that they should be deducted a point for persistent or routine screaming. They would soon stop !

Back in the day I don't recall Navratilova or Becker Borg etc doing this and it should be stamped out

.... and I would like to add the high fiving / fist punching fist routines that have become the norm in Doubles M/M F/F or Mixed .... its ridiculous.

The bird on now is actually speaking behind her hand in case the opposition can lip read at 50 paces as well - grrrrrrrrrr

IC1967 - please feel free to comment on my thread !

Jamie Murray and John Peers were holding tennis balls in front of their faces yesterday when they were talking to each other.  I reckon they were bitching about someone's hat in the crowd and didnt want the TV cameras to pick it up.

That does my head in the covering the mouth while talking, has nobody got a backbone to think i will say what i want, so what if they are lip reading me?.
Players should be banned the screeching is mind games to put others off, plus a bit of attention seeking thrown in.

Apparently there's been some research done into wherther or not this screeching/grunting malarrly actually has any effect.  I saw it reported on the beeb, I think, last week. The claim is that it does make a difference. Around 3% more power. Can't see any screecher stopping if that's really true. Sharapova needs to roar about 10 times louder given the way that Tamara Press lookalike, Serena Williams , blew her away.

True ...

My main worry is Kids copy and as most of them made the jump and still do to play 2 handed they will inevitably begin to screech / grunt

At least commentators for TV will become redundant as you would not hear them anyway. I don't know why they even bother with doing it on Radio (although they could say for example 15 love to Federere after a 21 stroke rally - but that's a different kettle of fish)
