Old Game Downloads

I was remiscing about some old games I used to play in my youth t'other day. Things like Cannon Fodder and the like. I would imagine games of that age being free or very cheap to download these days and there are plenty of hits ona Google search but I don't want to get a virus. anyone know of a reputable place to get 'em from?

To play Cannon Fodder you'll need and Amiga or ST.  Plenty of stuff here (http://www.lemonamiga.com/) and the links to the disks are generally pretty safe.

Where's Space Invaders?!!! I haven't found it yet. I used to be a reight whizz at that. Cost me a fortune....

Question: back in the VERY old days, the very first computer game I ever played used a cassette player for the app and some very primitive controls. But the game itself, and I really cannot remember its name, was absolutely cracking. It was a travel through space and fight the baddies game, but the stand out thing about it was you had to key in the direction of travel in degrees - and the compass was offset by, I think, 270 degrees. That made the mental arithmetic quite challenging when all hell was breaking out round the back of some planet you were orbiting.

Has anyone ever heard of a very old game like that? I'd soooo like to see the thing again.

Dutch: if you ever happen to come across this thread and post, it was your brother who had this game - during his time in Brentwood in those flats. I distinctly remember both of us staying up all night, several times, lost in that game. Funny really. I ended up marrying a girl from Brentwood who I met years after Pete had moved away. Wonder where she is now?!

I've put this on the back burner for now. A lad at work has lent me a copy of The Last of Us which I started last night. I can see it becoming quite intense!

I really used to like Space Harrier - I remember being on a Boys Brigade Camp in Whitby and the simulator was in one of the arcades there - the simulator for that game was immense - it was such a new game at the time that a guy who was in the sim was doing really well and had a right audience watching him!

You put a pound in and got loads of lives back then - loved it in the arcade and loved it just as much when it came out with our Atari ST bundle!

Going back to Bobs question, that game sounds a bit like an old game I used to play called Gyrus which was either in the Atari 2600 or the ZX Speccy days.

Thanks Craig. The name doesn't ring any bells, but tbh, it was so close to the dawn of the computer age that I'm not even sure it had a name. We had to run it from a cassette player onto one of those awful clunky green VDU's. Brilliant game though. Really made you think hard. And you could lose too - unlike in all the crap I see Alexander playing. He gets knocked down and just bounces right back up again. we got blasted outta da universe! No coming back from that ever. Start again....

Craig, Gyruss was like space invaders except your ship rotated around the outer edge of the screen and the aliens came from in the middle.  You had to travel from one planet in the solar system to the next.  Its a cracking game.

As much as I enjoy the games of today, most of which are more akin to watching an actual movie, nothing feels as good as the games of my early years: Pitfall, Space Invaders, Missile Command & Pac Man on the Atari 2600

That said, I can still remember being totally blown away when my old man finally agreed to upgrade me from the ZX Speccy to the Commadore Amiga. That felt like a whole new world to me at the time!
