Named Storm - Abigail
« on November 12, 2015, 07:01:22 pm by Donnywolf »
Is it just me or is naming Storms a ridiculous and pointless thing to do in the UK ?

I cant see the point for the UK and methinks we are "copying" (again) what the USA does but at least their storms can be massively disruptive and perhaps need "naming" because there can be 3 or even more happening simultaneously

imo we DONT need Storm names - get shut soon !

I was thinking exactly the same thing Wolfie while I was driving home from work and the weather bloke was rabbiting on about 'Abigail' on the radio. Stupid idea. Stupid anthropomorphism at its very worst. I know, I'm gonna call my driveway Eric.  There. That'll fox the buggers that think it's a drive.

I thought that Abigail was a tropical storm of which we're getting the back end. Is that not the case, then?

I've heard Abigail is going to blow really hard.
Sit back and relax boys.

Aneka Rice was on about it last Saturday as I was at work heading up the M18. She mentioned Hurricane this and that....then uttered the words Typhoon Fanny..........

I struggled to keep control of the van.....

No Mike ... unfortunately its not the case and the Met Office are / have been at pains to say things like "this is our first named Storm" so proud that they can do so it seems to me !!

Here is the blurb about it which "thankfully" I noticed described it as an "experiment" so lets hope that is all it becomes.

I don't mind if they reference the back end of Hurricane This or that which has crossed "the Pond" but to actively look for things we have endured in the past and then go to the trouble of naming them seems potty - again just imo

.... especially right now as the Remnants of Hurricane Kate from over the Pond AND Storm (i.e. lots of rain and higher than normal winds) Abigail are/were both on the Weather Charts together !

So saying the naming of a storm eases the confusion has been disproved as there are 2 of em on the go and I bet some people are more confused than they would have been

Talking of confusion, a few years ago I was in the bar on the Larne to Stranraer ferry on the Irish sea while Hurricane Charlie was blowing, talking to Hurricane Higgins about snooker.

If we get a winter like a couple of years ago they'll run out of names

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned the Transgender storm that is likely to come across next.

Apparently Hurricane Kate is on its way across the Atlantic, however as the naming trial is alphabetical and alternates between Male and Female names, by the time it reaches us it will become Storm Barney.

How did you manage to get Anneka Rice in your van, like?

I think it was actually Cyclone Fanny - like the 'cyclone' part of a Dyson, its just sucks everything in

If they're going to be naming a storm every couple of days, they'll be up to Zebedee before the middle of December.
