My memory of it is a bit sketchy, but I seem to recall he put some money into Rovers in the early 90s. It was when we were on our arse, as we often were in those days.

Is it me, or has The Grim Reaper been particularly busy this year amongst the famous?

I think I remember reading an interview with him where he was asked about being a Rovers fan. IIRC he said he wasn't a fan of the club but a friend (agent?) was and he chipped in a few quid to "own" part of the pitch as a favour.

I seem to recall that there was a piece on saint and greavsie once about paul daniels and rovers trying to sprinkle some magic on us when we were very nearly down and out one year! It may well have been the season mike jeffrey scored the goals to keep us up (altho I don't recall exactly) but I think we'd have stayed up that season due to a non-league compliant ground from kidderminster/kettering or stevenage whoever won the conf that year! I may have a fuzzy memory tho!

91-92 that was, Al. We actually would have stayed up because we avoided finishing bottom on the final day of the season.

We beat Maidstone 3-0 in what turned out to be their final game. Carlisle lost at Scunny and slipped below us. Some turn around considering Carlisle beat us 3-0 at BV on the opening day.

Steve Beaglehole did a terrific job with a very young team.

I think it was during the Richardson era that the penalty spots were sold. Paul Daniels bought two, and a further 378 were sold to anonymous buyers.

This story came out around the same time that a large patch of turf from doncaster Racecourse mysteriously went missing overnight, along with a 45 gallon drum of grass line marking paint from B&Q.

R.I.P. Paul Daniels.... Not had much luck lately with this tumour taking his life and not long ago his house was flooded and he lost prize possessions and was living in a mud hut. God Bless

True, Glyn, I'd forgotten that. I even went to both our games against Aldershot that never happened!

The one down at Aldershot was notable for being one of the few games played in the country and for being played in pretty thick fog. It finished 0-0.

I bought 2 pieces of turf when we were trying to raise money, they cost £25 each.  I've got the certificates somewhere mine were Main Stand and Popular Stand on the half way line but also on the touch line towards  the Rosso end ,when Belle Vue closed I went and fetched them and replanted them in my garden next to where my red plastic seat I've got from the ground

I was in his house about 15 years ago replacing his huge glazed Windows after the Thames had damaged them, him and his missus took eight of us who had driven down from Donny that day to his local for lunch, also did a couple of tricks for us in his lounge, what a top bloke he was.

Aye that's right guys I'd forgotten about maidstone and aldershot that year! I've still got a program from the maidstone game in a box somewhere! Did turnbull knock a hattrick of headers into the town end net against aldershot that season just before they went bust?

That was the season before, 90-1. I think it took us to the top of the table.

The Aldershot game at home in 1992 was not long before they went bust. Dougie scored the only goal. He was unlucky in that he lost two appearances and one goal from his record.
