Bayo Akinfenwa
« on May 19, 2016, 07:56:55 am by mrfrostsdad »
I was reading an article about him at the beginning of the season. He reckons he's lost weight (apparently he's only 18 and a half stone now!!!) and got himself fit!
Watched some of the Accrington/Wimbledon game last night ans he came in as sub. Changed the game completely. You just can't knock him off the ball. And the header he scored! Could quite easily have taken the defender and the ball into the net. Reminded me of the goal he scored in our promotion from League 2 game. Was it against Cambridge? Took the player out as he scored?

And then his interview after the game last night. I don't think I've ever heard anyone so passionate about what he is trying to do. Premier League? Overpaid foreigners? They just wouldn't understand

He'd be a better player if he was 16st.

He scored a vital header at Bristol rovers. Don't know if the one you referring to?

Cambridge at home
Scored and took their player into the net with the ball. Think the Cambridge player was carried off.

Didn't he get sent off at Bristol for punching one of their players?

That's the one I was thinking about Mike. Took the Cambridge player out as well as scoring. Think we won 2-0 and maybe Greeny scored the other? I think it was the day promotion was confirmed, or maybe finishing top?
If my memory serves me correctly, which it probably doesn't, I think it also confirmed Cambridge's relegation the the Conference

Cambridge actually went down the following season, which was actually a bit of Karma as a Cambridge fan described us as a "big boot side" in an end of season review.

Almost entirely right, the slight error with Cambridge going down you're probably getting muddled up with Carlisle, who we beat on the final day then lifted the trophy, they were relegated to the Conference along with...York City I believe.

We confirmed promotion on Easter Monday with that 2-0 win over Cambridge, goals from Green and Akinfenwa as you say, and won the title with a 0-0 draw away to Boston on the penultimate weekend, at which they gave us a guard of honour before the game.

All superb memories!

Watched game last night. Loved it when Holloway said that he had a twin brother but ate him.

He's not a Quality player. He can do a job at times fair enough but that's about it.

Depends what you mean by quality.

If you mean fit for purpose, then as a L2 level beast of a CF, then he is quality!

He became a bit of a gimmick player later in his career. Like he just decided to keep piling on the muscle at the expense of his cardio so he'd get coverage on Soccer AM. A shame as he showed real quality in his short spell with us.

it seems you don't know the sp on him
some time after he "left" rovers [his missus did not like the idea of him going up north (and he allegedly "used to be good with excuses" for "turning up late etc "when at rovers  )]
he got one or two career threatening legs injuries - and he had to have a metal rod - or something inserted in his leg - so he was always on relatively short term contracts - (failed a medical once for Millwall) in case he broke down  -  presumably he rightly made the most of his situation and "expanded outwards" seems like a really nice guy

It was a pity that he had to move to Torquay from us to get closer to London where he wanted to be.

If Richie still lives near Oldham, I wouldn't be so sure

And he doesn't have cross the Pennines either M 62 or Woodhead pass every day

Going back to Bayo goal at Bristol Rovers sticks in my memory.

That second goal against Cambridge, Paul Green's, was a real belting team goal wasn't it? I'd forgotten how good it was.

I seem to remember it being a diving header at the rossington end, where our fans were that season, when it used to be the away end!.
He is a bit of a cartoon character now, a big wardrobe with legs!.
He is an expert at scoring the goal line tap in, and taking the defender, goalkeeper and half the fans in the back of the net with him and the ball !.
