Lol. I cheat. I put a lump of ice in the first glass. As it melts I get the water. But I really can't simply turn the tap on... Still, got 3 different bottles of cask strength to try at some point. I might be forced to deploy 2 ice cubes....

I know you are supposed to but I just can't bring myself to put water in it😜

Sproty, if you buy the 'off the shelf stuff' at 40% then it already has water added to it to get it down to that strength!  So whatever you do, DON'T ADD WATER , it doesn't help, in fact, it hinders.  If you buy Cask Strength, (highly recommended), then firstly get the 'nose' of it - see what you can smell.  Then taste it, let it roll around you mouth before swallowing; what can you taste?  Now add a small dash of water, not too cold, and nose it again - notice a difference?  you should.  Now taste it again, the flavours should, strangely, be more open.

Oh, and please don't add ICE!  If you need to cool your dram then use Whisky Stones straight from the freezer, so much better.

Have you ever tried adding warm water from the kettle? It makes it taste smoother.

Damn ... I could have done with finding this thread earlier.

I have just bought my Twin Cousins some Cardhu each. I put down some of the bottles mentioned on here but have I selected a not bad one ?

Personally there are 2 drinks I cant stand Whisky  :chair: and Guinness  :chair: . Actually there must logically be a third. Guinness with Whisky in it ugh...  :chair: :chair:

It's lovely round there, I'd live there tomorrow if the circumstances were right...

Adding water is a must, but use only sufficient to take away the burn of the alcohol.  Far from diluting the taste, it actually enhances the flavour because your tongue isn't being burned.
And, one other thing, if you must use tap water at least use filtered, the chlorine might not ruin your whisky but it will be less than perfect.  If it's a special whisky why risk it.  Best to use bottled still water.

I prefer a drop of water in it, or ice if i've got any. Is it detrimental to keep Whisky in the fridge? I've thought of trying it to give it a bit of a chill.

My personal preference BB is not to chill it, I'm sufficiently chilled by the time I get to the bottom of the first glass.

Forever.  However long that is..

I too like a single malt - I don't much care for the blends.

However I have never got the water thing - maybe it stems from growing up believing not to dilute drinks.  When I first encountered someone asking for "bitter tops" I thought if you want a bloody shandy, ask for shandy!

Shouldn't you be sipping that wine Bob?
I thought only peasants like me swig wine for fun (Zinfandel usually).
Got a nice Chateau Neuf-du-Pape to go with today's beef though.
That will be sipped. 😉🍷
All the best for the new year.

I worry about the number of philistines who have infiltrated onto this forum a'lately.

Such indifference to culture wouldn't be tolerated here in Bentley. If you supped here you would have to show a bit of decorum like what us locals do, even when we're pissed.

Me/ I'm a swigger of wine...... I was at it again tonight - whilst discussing the woes of the world with a very well informed Tory supporter with a position of some influence who I've known for probably 30 years now.  He's drunk my wine and still hasn't changed his wrongly aligned views :)

Cheers

Idler, only last week I drank the best Zinfandel (or just about any other red) I have ever tasted... Kendall-Jackson - Mendocino County 2010 (California).  Say what you like about the Yanks, they make some fantastic red wines.

Wine is for yuppies and sissies and southern softies. Whisky and beer are best.
