I was in Morrisons their cheap water Pennine Spring is only a few pence cheaper than Highland Spring yet I know it comes from the bore hole of Ben Shaws Pop Factory in Huddersfield.
You should always look at the source of the water when buying. Aldi and Liddles comes from a bore hole at an old Airfield in Shropshire.

Generally speaking you get what you pay for. I got some cheap stuff from a shop in Barnsley once and I reckon it was diluted.

Anybody who pays more for their water than their petrol is ripe to be suckered!

I buy milk instead of water, and I drink Petrol instead of beer.

I have never, ever, been foolish enough to pay over the odds for a bottle of water. Can someone enlighten me as to why they would want to do so when there's plenty of water in a tap?

I think some people are worried about plenty of other things in the tap other than water.

I can understand that, but they don't know anything about the water in a bottle either...

No matter what we consume none of us know everything about every product we use. We have to trust what the label says.

I'm sure now that this bottled water scandal is in the open there will be severe consequences, starting with an immediate slump in sales.

Well, we do know that all drinking water has - by law - to pass the Drinking Water Inspectorate standards. The exact same standards for both tap water and bottled water. So what I don't understand is what something extra people think they're getting when they buy bottled..?

It's not what they are getting Glyn, it's what they are not getting...

Yeah, they're getting a typical Daily Mail (and other tabloid) scare story when they sensationalise a scientific report instead of scrutinising it.

Perhaps Glyn, it is nothing more complicated than your palate isn't able to make the distinction between chlorinated tap water and the clean taste of bottled water.

Nor are the palates of  - how many people? - who bought Tesco and Asda bottled water, apparently!

Unless, of course, the only difference in taste from one water and another is in the minds of those who want to think they've getting something somehow better..? A double blind taste test would be extremely interesting to see what results come out...

I must confess I've always thought that this fetish for bottled water is simply marketing and gullibility gone mad. It'd be fine and dandy in India or America, but here?

It seemed to happen at the same time as the fetish for 'labelled' clothing...which I found hilarious as I used to work in a knitwear factory that made Pringle, Fred Perry, Marks & Sparks, Edinburgh Woollen Mills, Aqua Scutum, C&A, Littlewoods, and loads more other 'name' brands. They were made by order of the brand owners (ie under licence, they weren't knock offs) - and they were all made on the same machines in exactly the same way as the factory's own-brand cheapo knitwear!

Also, the Pringle jumpers were put in bags that said 'Made in Scotland'...this in deepest Lincolnshire. Aye well, perhaps the bags were made in Scotland lol.

Yes. They were identical. Only the labelling and any embroidery differentiated them.

It's happened for decades BB. There'll be some little itty bitty thing somewhere that allows them to say 'Made in Scotland' or whatever. But if the cost is better outside Scotland the damn thing won't be made in Scotland that's for sure.

I used to work in a place that froze vegetables. Birds Eye, Findus, So and So's own brand. All off the same production line - in Lincolnshire. Watch the use of words in all these adverts BB. The use of language is one of the most subtle art forms that crosses our paths on a daily basis. Easy peasy example: 'Probably the cheapest in the world' for example. What message does that convey? And what does it actually say? There are waay more subtle ones than that around though. How do you think Governments get away with all the shite they come out with?

Used. This was 1985-89 when I worked there. But yes, they did. And later when I was a Customs officer I dealt with the declarations of stuff that was sourced from overseas when they used EC Preference so they could import Duty free (which we're now going to lose, by the way!) you'd see them all buying from cheapo places in Morocco and India and the like.

Spring water does taste different to tap water; if people want to pay a premium for that, why not let them. Not all tap water taste the same either; Yorkshire water tastes a damn site better than up here, which tastes like they pipe it straight from the Tees! And the water in South Wales is nicer than Yorkshire water.

The company I worked for didn't rip anybody off. How do you work that out?

What I found hilarious is that people bought stuff with a 'label' thinking it was somehow superior to another brand purely because of the label when in fact they were identical apart from the price!

So the company you worked for charged Pringle, Fred Perry, Marks & Sparks, Edinburgh Woollen Mills, Aqua Scutum, C&A, Littlewoods, and loads more other 'name' brands the same price for the goods as you charged for your own brand cheapo knitwear?
