The great debate
« on September 27, 2016, 03:54:02 pm by MachoMadness »
Sad to say I watched the whole thing and feel truly stupider for the experience. I don't feel like I know anything more about either candidate. Clinton won comfortably because although she said nothing, she said it much better than Donald "so unbelievably ok?" Trump who can't even keep track of his own lies and just looks so uncomfortable as he splutters about.

To put it in perspective, the number one story coming out of the debate is Trump's sniffle. Which he then takes deadly seriously and blames on a dodgy mic that was "maybe" sabotaged.

Our political landscape is f**ked right now but at least our bar isn't THAT low, eh?

They really are a pair of rotten candidates. Obviously Trump is unelectable but the Americans will soon get fed up of President Clinton 2.

I predict she will be a one-term President.

The thread should be called "The Mass Debate", for obvious reasons...

I genuinely had that in the title bar as a thread title at one point, IDM. I changed it before I posted it because I thought it was too highbrow for the topic at hand.

A stat coming out of the debate is that Trump told one falsehood every 3 minutes and 15 seconds on average. His campaign's response? Don't trust the fact-checkers because they have an agenda. People who check FACTS. Have an AGENDA.

Mind you, we're living in a country where people are fed up of experts, so maybe I can't say too much.

Why do people persist in sugaring all the piils?? I've hard radio describe what Trump did as 'telling falsehoods'. It's accurate of course, so you can't really gripe. But I'm going to anyway :) Why can't they use some of the plethora of other words available to describe what he did? Words like 'lie', 'mislead', 'hide'. You know. Words that have different subliminal characteristics.....

They are a pair of megalomaniacs who will ride roughshod over everything for their own personal gain. Both dangerous for world security. It's a tragic choice for America.

I guess a falsehood covers both things he knows are lies and things he just blurts out without knowing one way or the other, like his "Lester Holt is a Democrat" remark. It's a catch all term for talking shit, basically.

But yeah, what a horrible pair of candidates. It's like the choice between dying from gangrene or sawing your own leg off. It's really remarkable that the leaked emails revealed the DNC would rather have a Republican president than one who might compromise their interests like Sanders, which is part of the problem that has led to the rise of Trump.

Interesting to see how he recovers from this in time for Sunday. It seems his campaign is really in trouble for the first time, and it's not even for something he's said while on the campaign trail, heinous as it is.

Did he tell lies as often as those Brexiters though,  I very much doubt it . He will have something up his sleeve no doubt , perhaps she made someone cry in Junior High ? Whatever these are a nasty pair but I don't think they could hold a candle to the devious Theresa

The whole thing reminds me of South Park, the episode where all elections end up being a choice between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich.

However in this case, Trump is both...

I have no affinity for Clinton either but I fear for the world if Trump is elected..

You'd imagine he's finally f**ked it now with this latest storm. It seems this has been a step too far for the Republicans.

Somebody has been hanging on to this tape haven't they? It's far, far too good to have been allowed out until the timing is just right. Look at it: 3 weeks to go. Time for the ramifications to be explained; the other examples to be found as Mrs Smith of Nowheresville claims Trump said something awful to her once; time for the press and tv to get their teeth into it. But not enough time for Trump to ride it out.

Someone has really stuck the knife in hard.

That's because the Republicans like to be seen as the party of 'morality', especially in the Bible Belt. How can they be seen to back someone with the sexual morality of a dog in heat?

You're right, of course, but it's alarming that they were willing to overlook his past appearances in Playboy videos, creepy words about his daughter (more of which have come out today) and constant sexist slurs against women which never seem to stick until now. Even that sexual assault lawsuit never hurt him. I'll never understand American conservatives.

Oh I discovered the answer to that MM!  Did a bit of digging around y'know? It seems they've all been required to have a frontal lobotomy. Of course, that explains everything.

No it isn't, it's because all his previous crap has been about the usual suspects when it comes to scapegoating, like the Mexicans or Moslems, ie 'that lot over there'.

This time however, he's talking about abusing women. And every Republican and all of their potential supporters have a mother. Maybe even sisters or daughters. Trump is talking as though their mothers, sisters, daughters and any other women in their lives are legitimate targets for his unwanted sexual advances. And on top of that, he came out with it just a month after getting married. It's getting to the stage where his supporters are trying to defend the indefensible, and it sounds like Trump's going to try and smear Bill Clinton (and by implication Hillary) in tonight's debate in some sort of attempt to justify himself in a 'he did it so it's OK for me to do it too'

That's the difference.

I doubt whether Hilary will give him much of an opportunity  to go down that avenue . Probably she might be advised to take a small swipe at him if and when he loses his rag as he surely will and only if prevoked.  The damage has already been done....Surely ?

I just wish Hilary would finish him off. He had the audacity last night, prior to the "debate", to sit with 4 woman who accuse Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct... this is days after the tape was released the proved 10 years ago he saw women as meat and claims he can grab the pu**y of any woman he wanted! The f*cking nerve of the man!

Yes have to admit that was pretty unbelievable, and seen as though he was talking about her husband and not her pretty irrelevant..I thought uk politics was a mud slinging business but boy do they beat it..I watched last nights debate and what surprised me was there was very little talk about the future in regards policy's etc etc..It was all about the past...
Reality is there was a stage a few weeks ago that a Trump win was a distinct possibility but hopefully that threat is not as large right now..But a weeks a short time in politics so who knows..

I saw a great tweet on the topic yesterday. Trump: Don't judge me on the man I was 10 years ago, judge Hillary on the man her husband was 20 years ago.

Trump says the tape isn't 'the real him'.

Is this the first time a politician has defended himself by pointing out how two-faced he actually is?

Well, that was legitimately uncomfortable to watch.

Clinton didn't seem entirely sure how to handle Trump, who just came out swinging with as many personal attacks as possible in the hope that some of it stuck. It was like watching someone try to pick up a catherine wheel. How can you even debate that in any meaningful way?

I just wish Hilary would finish him off. He had the audacity last night, prior to the "debate", to sit with 4 woman who accuse Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct... this is days after the tape was released the proved 10 years ago he saw women as meat and claims he can grab the pu**y of any woman he wanted! The f*cking nerve of the man!

The problem with that is if Clinton did address it then she'd legitimise it as a tactic. Let Trump just sink himself, he'd just deny everything anyway and none of it would stick as far as his supporters go.

Unfortunately i think he will be the next president. I know the polls don't point to him winning, it's just a hunch. For me he seemed to win that debate other night, not by much but i thought he edged it.
I think the actual figures deciding who wins are much closer than is thought.
