My Son has decided to have his Stag Night in Donny.
« on January 13, 2017, 12:24:43 am by bangormaine »
While I insist that he is 100% English he and his pals were all born in Scotland. His trips to Doncaster have all bee short lived affairs to see now departed family, but he is having his Stag Night in Donny, and I am invited. He is starting off with an evening meet at The Racecourse, suit and tie in The Premier Suite and asked me about The Fiesta, Spanish restaurant in Armthorpe, followed by a few beers in Silver Street. He has heard me talk of my love for that street when I was 18, 46 years ago.
Anybody got any views on 15, 30 year olds, quite respectable and me having a good time in these venues, especially the Spanish Restaurant that I know nothing of. The event is in May.

I go to the Fiesta regularly as I live locally.
Can't recommend it highly enough.
Great food and atmosphete with entertainment on weekends.
It's only small though so might have problems booking if there's loads of you going.

Lazarus Court would probably suit them more if they're around 30.

I echo tommy toes comments about LaFiesta, love it.  Wouldn't want a bunch of drunken jocks spoiling the ambience mind

I like La Fiesta too. Decent fodder & atmosphere but as above quite small so make sure you book well in advance!

I rarely venture into town on a night these days but again I would agree that Silver Street is not the place to be. Full of cocky young bell ends looking for bother. The only exception to that being Biscuit Billy's. Bradford Row is generally much better.

The lad's barmy if you ask me though. No doubt you'll end up in Bentley's which is the worst strippers I've ever been to. Better choice would be to book a minibus to Sheffield form the races. Go somewhere up London Rd/Eccy Rd for a bit of nosebag and head to Division Street/West Street for decent, lively pubs. Then meander to Spearmint or one of the casinos (or both) later on. Job's a good 'un.

I organised a stag do in Doncaster about 4/5 years ago (despite my suggestions to the groom we'd be better off going elsewhere!) We did clay pigeon shooting out near Austerfield, then Rovers (instantly forgettable draw with Yeovil) and the dogs. It was a great day until we got into town when it all fell apart. Not a patch on what it was anymore, and I'm saying that as someone who only started going out about 6-7 years before then!

I'd echo the comments above - get yourself to Sheffield or Leeds for later on. I've had a few nights in Bawtry and that's pretty decent if you're keen to stay closer to home. I think it's a nice idea from your lad, having it somewhere that you remember fondly, but Silver St is sh*te these days

I quite like a night out in Donny but would probably agree it's not ideal for a stag do. I'd say give York a go if you want to go to the races and take in some decent pubs.

The Spanish guiarist in La Fiesta played in the band Los Bravos and had a world wide hit with Black is Black

I work with a lot of people from Sheffield and they all hate it, and most come to Donny for a night out. Surprising.

Donny has always been townie hell in my eyes.   Much better off in Sheffield or Leeds

I think it depends where you go - I'm not fussed about silver street and never have been!

As alluded to on here earlier in the thread if there's 15 of em around 30 lazarus court maybe a better option or round the market place: Mason's Arms/Rum Rooms, the Marketplace Deli (next door to mason's), Red Lion, CourtYard even round to (dare I say it) Black Bull and The Old Castle - decent pubs with decent pints - altho Black Bull and Castle used to have their own breed of older 'idiot's - I'm not sure what the clientele or like in those last two now - but the Black Bull had an outside area face-lift not long back and that area is pretty cool!

I suppose really it depends what they're after - lasses wearing very little, absolutely plastered and lads hurling abuse and acting hard with each other, absolutely plastered - Silver Street! Decent drinks and slightly older clientele - market place, high st/main St is I think a slightly watered down version of silver street, lazarus court trendier bar type place!

Personally I'm a market place guy - mason's arms/rum rooms is generally my chosen place to start and finish!

I'm with you Al on that one. Market place for me nowadays. When I started going round town in the early 90s, Silver Street was absolutely rammed. Mind you, most areas of town were. This was my route back in the day.

Oscars
Nags Head
The Gardens
Old George (sometimes Woolpack)
The Gallery
Biscuit Billy's
White Bear
AD43
Emporium
Karisma

And then The Warehouse

Priory Walk is dead now too since Walkabout and Mood packed in.  Nice tapas bar down there now though.

Gardens and gallery nudga - blimey I'd forgotten all about them! Lol!

Hey btw - you wanna renew your commercial partner link? We (as in the VSC) have kinda lost touch with that side of things over the last coupla turbulent years - now things look to have steadied and be on the up we'll be looking to rekindle that side!

Plenty of decent pubs in Donny as mentioned above I'd add Tut N Shive, Little Plough, Donny Brewery, Cask Corner and Flying Scotsman to that list too.

pmsl .... I read this thread thinking ugh ugh ugh and then like Copps at Brentford up popped the last post and what a Match winner !

I would not even need an excuse like a Stag do to visit these Pubs and my only comment suggested amendment has been made in the quote above. Spot on rtid88

The Gallery was a good gaff. Nelson's, Coach and Horses, Spiders Web, Silks.

Is the Corner Pin still going? That was a fine pub in years gone by.

Think so.

A friend of mine had the Horse and Jockey until recently. Not sure if that's still open though.

Thanks Mr Frost. Always enjoyed there. They had the most ENORMOUS column of 2p coins on the bar. Collecting for charity I think. It was made up of lots of columns all snuggled up together and it was vast. Goodness knows what happened to it in the end. Be worth a few quid to someone though.

Went in Cask Corner intending to have a drink on the Tuesday after Christmas. Absolutely stank of piss so I walked straight out. Very disappointing!

The upstairs where the toilets are is a f**king tip as well.

And because there's only one bog in the place (other than a disabled one downstairs) you have to go on the stage to get to the upstairs one, which is a bit embarrassing if there's a turn on!

Hey, if you think that's bad, I once had to have an Eartha Kitt in the Goose in a carsie with no bloody door. I swear everybody in the place came in to have a gander.

Thing is, young 'ens nowadays get pissed on two pints of lager and then get the urge to vandalise things. It is understandable why pub owners don't rush to repair things. It's not like because they are insured they get things repaired for free, it will result in their premium going up.

Someone has to pick up the bill.
