Having seen that I am less bothered about the penalty miss - I don't think is was a penalty in the first place, looks to me like the defender got the ball first.
Just seen it and it did look soft, rather like Marquis' penalty. A penalty taker is normally someone who's everpresent. Yes, Marquis fits the bill but for me player who's made career out of sending players the wrong way is Coppinger. Given his ability and captain status I would have thought he should step up to the plate.
Surely a striker should be the best qualified to score a penalty? A player becomes a striker because of his competence in front of goal, and if there's a lack of confidence or technique that renders the player to have a poor return of penalty success, then his proficiency has to be questioned. If a team replaced its goalkeeper with an outside player when they conceded a penalty there would have to be doubts about the keeper's ability.
Dennis Irwin of Manchester United used to take theirs.[/quoteYes I forgot about him.Still racking my brain though to think of defenders who were regular penalty takers.

Most strikers score on instinct, often in the split-second mayhem of a crowded box. The less they have to think the more likely they are to score (Sharp, Blundell are good examples). Penalties are a set piece. Line it up, clear the mind, put it somehwere where the defence can't deal with it. Playmakers. Go back a couple of decades and defenders were just as likely to take a penalty.
