Someone put me out of my misery. What was the Pub called at Eastern end of St Georges Church - now a Saddlery. It too was a reputed "Gay" Pub.

Wolfie, It was called The Crown

Don't think this is a gay thing but if memory serves me correctly The Old Crown was the last pub in central Donny which had outdoor urinals with no roof.

Sorry. I don't agree Bally :)

I'ma child of the 70's. The reason i know about the Underground is because a mate of mine from school took the wind right out of my sails one day by announcing that he had soemthing important to tell me. That was that he was gay. Good God! anyway, he ended up taking me to the Underground. After the initial 'backs against the wall' moments, it was actually pretty good. the people in there were very pleasant and nobody was pushy. As he and I left Danum in 1974 and we met up when we were back from uni, he told me his news sometime between 74-and 78. And it was definitely the Underground he took me to!

Wasn't Silver Link down by Owen Owens?

Cheers

Bob

Straying very far off topic but I had a rather funny experience at a similar bar last week. Was meeting some mates after work on the Strand, they were at the pub at one end but I was on my way in towards Charing Cross. I figured I'd have about 15 minutes before our restaurant reservation so messaged to see if they could come to a pub closer that we could have a swift pint before our meal. They replied saying "Meet us at Halfway to Heaven. Closest pub to the restaurant and plenty of time to squeeze one in".

In a bit of a rush, I went in and ordered a round, it wasn't until I'd had my first sip that I realised that there wasn't a very even male/female ratio. In fact there wasn't a ratio at all. What there was were a lot of rainbow decorations. And some pretty lively disco music for 7pm on a Wednesday.

Stitched up well and proper but I feel like I got the last laugh - the beer was cheap, it's always a nice boost to the ego to get some admiring glances and I'm actually a big fan of Donna Summer's music.

Looking at that picture Wolfy I'm sure that it was the Dockin Hill Tavern until the 70s at least but my memory could be wrong. I did leave Donny in 1977.

No it was The Old Crown ... I posted a photo earlier and said I was answering " my own question"

I then signed out and of course the Photo (I assume) went missing

A glimpse of Old Belle Vue here at 21:59. Or something that looks fiendishly similar.

Silver Link has been dealt with

You are probably thinking of The Blue Bell opposite what was Owen and Owen ? Slightly down an alley to enter it - miss that one

Also a narrow passageway to Nags Head opposite what you may remember as Hodgson and Hepworth seen in this article

http://www.thornegazette.co.uk/news/picture-gallery-doncaster-s-long-lost-pubs-1-7557715

Yorkist also between the 2 - now Travel Agent (Thomas Cook maybe)

Good if not comprehensive list here

Mate of mine like an idiot sparked up a joint in Beethams only to get nicked almost straight away (seem to recall Cliff the landlord was ex drugs squad) when questioned who else had been smoking it my mate kept shtum insisting it was only him he was then asked how long he had been wearing lipstick

The Nags Head was where Kevin Keegan used to drink. You could sometimes see him in there on a Saturday night after he'd played at Anfield.

Bowers Fold place was latterly the Wellington Vaults wasn't it?

I've got a vague recollection of stumbling in there to knock out some karaoke at some point. No idea if it was still generally a gay bar at the time; I don't recall there being any overt signs (rainbows, camp barmen, blokes with big 'taches and leather hats).

I never went in the Warehouse and wish I had given it a try at some point just to see what it was like but as per Oslo, I've never been into drugs. Had the odd dab of speed now and then but never a pill-head.

The Wellington was the pub demolished when Bowers Fold was just a ginnel. That opened up a bit of space for the shops.
Stamp Corner was in a little shop in there as well  before moving to Scott Lane.

The Underground in Bowers Fold later became Wellington Vaults.

Probably renamed in honour if you can call it that of where the old Wellington was.
