I can't imagine Fatty being as generous about us if we slam them next week.

MARCUS Bignot reckons if Grimsby Town could have held on to their lead until half-time, today's defeat to Doncaster Rovers would have been a 'different story'.

The League Two leaders brushed aside the Mariners 5-1 after Sam Jones had opened the scoring for the hosts.

But after that opener, it was all about Rovers as they impressively went up through the gears, with John Marquis getting them on terms three minutes after falling by tapping home before grabbing his second in five minutes when he powered home a header from a corner.

The powerful frontman took his tally to 26 for the season when he burst clear and fired home his and Doncaster's third just after the hour-mark before Andy Williams added a fourth.

Town's miserable afternoon was completed a minute before time when a late corner was fumbled over the line to make it 5-1, with sub Alfie May claiming the goal.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Bignot said: "I thought we started really well and were really positive. There were a lot of encouraging signs.

"We got ourselves ahead, which was a real bonus, but within a few minutes, we were 2-1 down going into half-time. If we'd held out for that period, then, certainly, the second half would have been a different story to how it ended.

"You ask Darren Ferguson how well we started. You ask him how many problems we caused them early on. Twelve months ago we were in the National League – they were in League One.

"We started well and got in front and if we could have held out to half-time, I guarantee we would not have been having this conversation. But we didn't and now we are having that discussion.

"I'm as bitterly disappointed as any fan tonight.

He's omitted to mention that Rovers should have been at least two up before they scored.

Two great chances and their keeper made a good save from Rowe. Could have been more than 5.
