30 Goals in a season
« on April 02, 2017, 11:17:37 am by 1879Rovers »
I am sure DU and TRB will have the answer to this. Marquis is now closing in on 30 goals in a season. With the 20 goal record being 40 years ago, how long is it since 30 were scored in a season and by whom?

Are we going back to Alick Jeffrey in the 60s?

Also who is the leading goalscorer in their first season at the club?

Alick with 39 (36 in the league) in 1964-65 was indeed the last time for 30 in a season.

It has only happened for us 6 times ever in the league, and seven times if you include all competitions. 3 of those were by Tom Keetley in the 1920's

Laurie Sheffield scored 28 league goals in the 1965-66 season.
Last player to notch thirty or more was the man himself Alick Jeffrey in his first full season back in league football after two broken legs when he scored 37 in the league in 1964/65.

Sorry, Dutch beat me too it and looks like I got the number of goals wrong as well.
Got it from the Ernie Wiles Facts and Figures book.

I have that book Lifelong, and in general I do find it less reliable than Bluff and Watson, and club handbooks.

The Red Baron and I have been looking at 'dubious' goals given differently in different sources, but we have really only identified a problem rather than solving one.

Laurie Sheffield scored 28 goals in his first season for Rovers in the 1965/66 4th division Championship winning season. King Alick scored 22 in a 50 goal partnership.

Looking at the two books it seems that Bluff and Watson have Phil Robinson scoring in a 2-0 win at Wrexham in September 1964, whereas Ernie has Alick scoring both.
Wonder if anyone on here was at the match and can remember?
It's only 53 years ago!

There are two books 1879

Donny, The Official History of Doncaster Rovers by Tony Bluff and Barry Watson, 1994

and the updated version

Donny, Doncaster Rovers The Complete History by Tony Bluff, 2010

Good reading!
