Good news from the EFL
« on April 06, 2017, 06:48:16 pm by silent majority »
In a collective bid to help more players make the transition from Academy to first-team football, EFL Clubs also agreed to introduce a requirement for at least one club developed player to be named on each team sheet for any EFL League game from the start of the 2018/19 season.

"A club-developed player is defined as one who has been registered to the club for at least a year before the end of his under-19 season."

So that's Lund, Middleton, Longbottom, Mandeville, etc for us which I reckon we've done most of this season anyway.

I like the rule but I think it's a bit odd from an organisation that voted in EPPP which has led to clubs getting rid of their academies.

Good idea but the concept is flawed. Teams will just have their youth keeper sat on the bench and pray their first team keeper doesn't get injured.

And that would help the club in question how? The idea is to develop your own talent and by including one on the bench does just that.

But then you make sure that you dont have any crap kids in your squad.

It will force clubs to make sure that in their academy they have some talented individuals and if that means an investment in the academy then so be it.

Seriously, for all the talk about developing home grown players and not relying on foreign imports I fail to see how this one small step in that direction can attract the negative responses it has.

It's just cynics.

It doesn't really affect us as a club anyway as we've always had one of Mandeville, Middleton, Lund, Fielding, Longbottom or Jones in our squad. Next season it might include Beestin and Donaldson aswell (Not sure their age).

No it doesn't! It just effectively reduces the first choice substitutes to 4. On the plus side it elevates and gives the best Academy player vital experience and enhances the progression. When and if brought on might just surprise some people>

Does a club developed player have to be 'home grown' or would a foreign national qualify?

I think with us still being in the EU we can legally say British only. So it'll be European wide.
