Another smell thread > that maggot farm
« on April 20, 2017, 05:45:12 pm by not on facebook »
Fcuk me I lived in cantley and when the wind was blowing this way what a bloody stink that place let off.

It was that bad that I would sometimes gip .

Where was this farm located in Doncaster ? And how bad was this place on your doorstep?

Would love to hear from anyone that worked there as too what was actually going on in this place .

I take it that it has been shut down now.

I don't know of any maggot farms out Cantley way so guess you're talking about what we used to know as DeMulders at Bentley.  Didn't realise Cantley was downwind of it.  It's still there but much less smelly these days since local authority forced them to clean up their act.

I do remember De Mulders kicking up a stink on a regular basis back in the 70's. Did they not have to carry out a lot of remedial work to allow them to carry on their business?

Must have been the de mulders that I was thinking about.

For some reason I had it in me head that it was a maggot farm that I could smell.

What on a earth did they do there

Thank fcuk for that fella as I thought I was going mad .

I seem to recall two really bad smells ,one been the de mulders which was a sweet sickly terrible smell
which made me gip

and the maggot farm smell which was bad enough ,but not a patch on the de mulders .

This must have been in the mid 1970s I guess .

You could smell de Mulders in Balby when the wind was in that direction.
I did hear that it only smelled badly when there was something wrong with the plant there.
Possibly right as it wasn't too often but bad when it did reach you.

I seem to remember the maggot farm was Clifton which is sort of behind Crookhill  and it did stink that would have been  60's early 70's

DeMulders was bloody awful. Used to get it in Bessacarr sometimes. They ground up bones to make fertiliser and bonemeal and stuff from the remains of carcasses. Rotting meat all over the place..... I wouldn't have worked there for a billion a year.

When I worked for Severn Trent I had to make frequent visits to an office that was next door to a sewage farm. I felt for the guys who had to work there every day.

The place that smells in Misson is called Tunnel Tech and its a mushroom farm. God knows what they do with them but it involves mulching them. I used to work for a security firm that dealt with them about four years ago, and I visited about once a month. It stunk.

The chippy at Bentley West End used to insist that workers on the way home from DeMulders stand outside the shop to be served.  Didn't let them through the door.

Did anyone ever go on the boating lake at sandal park.

The ddr would go here mob handed in our spoty teens turned out in our best sporty clobber > fila Lacoste, ellesse, louis cords/jeans adidas sambas ,Bjorn borg elite.

It was 4 2 or 3 in each boat ,depending on how hard you was and then it was every boat for its self .no such things as queensbury rules
in this boat off ,and god help you if you ever got de boated by your boat onto the island  > never pick any one up from the island as they would have to wade back thou the pond.

idea was to get them in that boat into the drink .

By end of day there was allways a few that ended up in the pond ,and my god did you stink rotten while sat on bus into town .

How can pond weed smell and slime  that bad.

Which leads me on to a question I've pondered the last few weeks. One side of Wheatley Hall road is very well developed, but opposite the retail park, Dunelm (etc...), Goals - pretty much all the land past ICI going up to Polypipe is all derelict and majorly undeveloped. I think the only thing I saw there was a hut that sold sheds and a base for the limousine vehicles and nowt else.

Is this because of the sewage thing (possibly major underground pipe work etc...)  or is there another reason?

That would be most days then....  ;)

The only maggot farm I remember was out at Harlington.  Went there one time to buy some and the guys working there were having their lunch.  Don't know to this day how they could eat sandwiches amidst that stench!

A mate of mine once did a bit of temp work at deMulders. He had what he described as the "cleanest job in the plant" which entailed stacking fresh blocks of lard onto pallets. He would still scrub his hands and arms repeatedly before having his snap but by all accounts some of the blokes with much messier jobs would tuck into their butties with all manner of animal remnants on their hands. The sight of it smeared over the white bread butties they were eating was apparently quite repulsive!

Warning* Don't read this if you're having your supper.*

A mate of mine once worked there and on his first day, they gave him a piece of meat to cut up. He realised it was some sort of initiation when as he sliced into the piece of dead animal it exploded and covered his face in a foul-smelling matter. They had given him a piece of meat that had a massive abscess on it.

Fcuk Iam just about spewing me ring thinking about that .

I would have played along with them and looked like I took it on me chin ,but the first time I would have been in any pub with them having a pint.if they ever went to bogs and left their pints on the table I would have slapped my smegma coated bell end into their lonely pints .

That land is all earmarked for housing, it will be a massive development.
