David Busst is the stuff of nightmares.

I think that was the worst I've seen until this one.

An article on the Busst injury. The infection he picked up probably caused him more problems than the break, awful as that was. Infection is a huge risk with an open fracture.

The Luc Nillis one, which happened when he was playing for Aston Villa and also ended his career, is pretty horrific too.

I've no desire to watch that American Football injury. But it'll be going some to be worse than Seamus Coleman's earlier this year. I've never before or since seen a player cartwheeling in a clockwise direction after a tackle whilst his lower leg was cartwheeling in an anti-clockwise direction. It's a tribute to him and the medical staff that he was back training within six months of the injury. I'd expected it to be a career-ender.

I suppose that what happened to Nikki Lauda can be called a sporting injury too.

I once played in a match where our right back and our keeper collided when both were going for a high ball.
The right back, a lad called Gary Bell from Armthorpe, had his leg bent 90 degrees in the wrong direction, the opposite way from what it should do.
Very grim.
A photographer behind the goal just happed to get a picture of the moment of impact and I still feel queasy when I think about how bad it was.

Yes, that was horrific although I think the Zach Miller one is worse. I think I am fairly good at coping with these (probably because I have an interest in sports injuries) but it made me blanch far more than the others did.

Two other things on Zach Miller. They had to act quickly to restore blood flow to his lower leg but the latest news is positive. The other is that the galahs officiating the game disallowed the touchdown! We thought we only got s**t refs!

I just tried watching the link at the top from a half looking away angle but switched it off before the incident happened.

Not sure if I witnessed the worst injury during a Conference game at Belle Vue, but I reckon it might have been the most painful, when an away player stopped a certain goal on the goal line with his Cream Crackers. It was a 100 mph pile-driver that smashed into his Mitchell brothers, resulting in him being carried off by two blokes clutching a leg apiece at 180 degrees. Poor bugger was as White as a ghost.

I don't think that it was as bad as Mike Hawthorne's to be fair. Not to mention the other F1 fatalities.

If you want some really graphic F1 stuff go on You Tube and look for Tom Pryce. Possibly the most horrific incident ever. At least Miller, Busst, Lauda et al lived to tell the tale.

For those who don't recall it was the South African GP in 1977.

Don't recall that but I do remember a Gillingham player stopping a Glynn Snodin free-kick with his wedding tackle. He too had to be carried off.

Gonna say, hard to include motor racing injuries because many have ended in death, so it's not much of a comparison. The Tom Pryce one is horrific beyond belief, for him and the marshal. I would recommend not watching or looking at any footage from that incident to be honest.

In football, Luc Nilis' was extremely bad. I remember still the newspaper back page still from the following day at point of impact, absolutely disgusting.

Eduardo anyone? Whilst at Arsenal, you could see his leg bone through the sock, foot just hanging off. That was a real horror tackle by Martin Taylor too, no need for it.

The Eduardo one was so bad that Sky didn't show a replay. Amazingly he played again, although he wasn't the same player.

Henrik Larsson made a remarkable comeback after a really bad break.

I have seen the Tom Pryce incident and like you wouldn't suggest anyone watches it. To be honest, I'm surprised it is still available on YouTube.

Willis McGahee gets what can only be described as a flamingo leg:

And just the other day Gordon Hayward of the Boston Celtics broke his leg.  The reaction of the Cleveland bench says it all:

Amazing that McGahee went on to have a 10 year career in the NFL after that.

When playing rugby against West hartlepool, I suffered a compound fracture of my knee and ankle, my knee cap was on the left hand side, and my ankle had twisted to the right, I was in plaster for 18 months

I was in hospital a couple of years ago with a guy who had had a similar injury playing rugby. He got caught at the bottom of a ruck with his leg trapped underneath him. Not nice.
