Better than anything we've got now, but as Ferguson doesn't play with wingers, where would he play? Left back? In goal?

There's no doubt about his quality of delivery, shooting and free kicks however, question marks for me about his overall workrate which, our team already has an issue with.

Whether it's a yes or no from us, I don't see him as being DF's sort of player. Stranger things have happened though!

He's far better than anything we have in our team at present and has bucket loads of experience, so it's a definite yes - why would we say no to a player better than what we have?

However, seeing is believing...

If we do end up signing him, it'll be good, but we still have other areas where we must strengthen (as outlined in the other thread) and we can't forget about these if we make a mini marquee signing.

No.

You bemuse me Gaz.

You talk some sense about football, but you hate our most effective players and love our non-delivering show-ponies.

I’ve seen Cotts play a lot, for us and for his other sides. I don’t like him. He’s exceptionally gifted technically, nobody can doubt that, but he’s lazy and completely void of any heart. Our promotion season was a bit of a freak, every shot he hit went in and every other cross he put in got headed in by big Rob. He was pathetic the season after, all be it in the championship. For what we would have to pay him I’d be able to find you a more affective player that would fit into the systems we deploy.

What Tommy Rowe would be if he had 10pc less heart and 20pc more ability.

Fair points.

But, “exceptionally gifted but lazy and completely devoid of any heart” in my opinion perfectly sums up what Forrester was like for us. And, again in my opinion, Forrester never delivered a tenth of what Cotterill did. But you were very supportive of him.

I’m genuinely interested in what you saw in the relative merits of the two.

Cotterill remains one of the most effective League 1 players I have ever seen. Someone who regularly delivered moments of quality that win football matches. What was it? 10 goals and 20 assists or something ridiculous like that in 2012/13.

I'd welcome him back in an instant, providing that it made sense within the club's budgetary constraints of course.

He was the sort of quality player we can only dream of having now.

I’ve never seen a Rovers player consistently strike a ball so violently and accurately from 20 yards as Cotterill did in 2012/13. And I’m old enough to remember Glynn Snodin in 1984/85.

It looks simple when you see it done well, but you rarely see it done as well as he did. Superb technique, consistently executed. When you have that in your side at this level, you’re happy to have other players compensate for whatever weaknesses he might have.

That post brought back some memories for me.

I was a guest in a box owned by a Leeds fan customer who had invited me and a mate (in the hope that Leeds would win and he could give me stick he told me later).
When Cotts smashed that one in i shouted out the usual "yyyeeeeeeesssssss, get in" without thinking.
In front of me were a few hundred of their fans who all turned round and gave me the glare.

Maybe someone can post a link to that game.

As i recall, our second goal by Sharp came after we had about thirty passes leading up to it.

I remember the home fixture vs Colchester, which was a bit of a pants game meandering towards a 0-0.

Then Cotterill banged in a worldy from the wing, unstoppable, and won us an extra 2 points towards that promotion.

Last Saturday showed we are missing players to go wide. Blair was injured and We do not have a left sided player who could do the same.

If we played a flat four in midfield or three behind a striker Cotterill could do the left or right role.
DF does not appear to play that way so he may not be a player he’s looking at.

But it would release Rowe to play behind the striker and Cotterill we all know can provide crosses into the box and also when coming inside has a good shot.

It might be that it’s all sorted and his next contract at a club is ready for him to sign.

he did score some goals for us, cutting in from the left and curling one in with his right foot.

I think that the Colchester one mentioned above was one of those.

I'm pretty sure he'll have plenty of options at teams who,
a. Are at a higher level
b. Can afford him
c. Defend well enough to give him free rein to deliver great set pieces & crosses

Can't think why he'd want to come back to us and I don't think he's a 'fergie' type of player, but, if there was an opportunity, we'd be stupid not to take a player who would improve our team.

Wasn't that Saunders last game in charge? Sure he sodded off to Wolves a few hours later.

It was. The useless Emile Sinclair played in that game.
