RIP -Jimmy Armfield.

Just heard the news.

I never saw him play but know him for his excellent insightful analysis. Always measured. The antithesis of most modern summarisers and all the better for it.

RIP

I heard him as a summariser on the radio for an England match around the time when Rooney first got in the national side. Armfield said that the player Rooney most reminded him of was Alick Jeffrey.

I remember when Wayne Rooney was just emerging as a teenage talent at Everton, and Armfield being asked if he had seen anyone similar to Roooney and as good at that age - and he immediately talked about Alick.

Was an attacking full back who my dad used to say "turned defence into attack with great anticipation"

He entered that in a Competition and was gutted when he did not win !

One of the more interesting summarisers to listen to.

He played in the U23 side at the time Alick made his fateful debut. Interesting to see Stan Anderson also played in that match. Alick was the first England player to be substituted - by Colin Booth. David Pegg featured in the squad at that time too.

Caretaker England boss Howard Wilkinson at a 1999 press conference, angry at suggestioins he lacked international experience:

"How many England caps have you lot got betweeen you?"

Voice from the back of the room: "43."
