Rossington End
« on January 24, 2018, 09:19:49 pm by German Rover »
I seem to remember when I was a kid in the 80s there was a cage on the away end, presumably to manage the risk of hooliganism. Problem is I can't find any photos.

Is my mind playing tricks on me or am I right?

Give us a hand!

There was originally an inward-facing overhang to prevent fans climbing over the fence, but this was removed at some point (probably after an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights).

Yep,And if it started raining, they often moved the away fans to mingle with us on the mainstand terrace.Contradicting the need of the cage in the first place.

Usually referred to as the pig pen. It was absolutely horrendous. The fanzine at the time ‘Raise the Roof’ would include an apology to away fans in every issue for treating them like caged animals.

I recall a Friday night game against Cardiff when they moved their fans out of the Rosso end and into the main stand terrace which made the evening very interesting.

I am sure I remember a portion of the Rosso end, being fenced on all sides.

I think that was when the terracing had been reduced in size, much like the pop side was..  The whole of the corner terracing between the pop side and the Rosso end was taken away..

Correct - that's what you can see in the photo above.

A picture I took at the home game against Cambridge in 1990. Not the clearest but you can see the fences.

Thinking on, the "cage" was just the middle third of the terrace - there was a fenced walkway from the turnstiles for the first third, then the cage, then disused terrace.

The first part of the away end was a corridor down to the open area, before they extended it and got rid of the corridor. It went to 2/3's length of the Rosso end. Then eventually it was extended to full length.

There's a couple of pics here which show my abiding memory of what the Rosso end was like...

Oh my god I loved that terrace, mainly I stood on the popside but my favourite memory stood on there was the night we put Hull out of the league cup.

A very foggy early evening, the fact 20,000 turned up helped lift the fog.
