Lets talk about the Walsall game
« on February 11, 2018, 01:17:38 pm by selby »
A game that takes more significance after our performance yesterday. After watching a great game at Portsmouth, and as good  away team performance as we have played all season, I was as frustrated as everyone else with both our general play, and the changes we made to our line up,which ended up making Rowe play in his most unproductive position, and robbing our midfield of the skill factor. Will we ever stop making the game complicated, and start to pick players in positions they are most comfortable in?
I  would definitely bring Garrett back in to my line up, As well as McCollough who has made a case  for a start with his two substitute  performances.
The Walsall midfield is full of experience with Chambers being their answer to Coppinger in a destructive get your foot in way, and pass it on to players like Guthrie, Edwards, and Morris who can play a bit. And in the game at the Keepmoat they had a couple of big strong fast strikers.
They are a club that seem to have played at this level for ages, flirting with both playoff aspirations and once or twice relegation but more often than not end up comfortably in mid table, which given their financial clout, is testament to a well run lower league club.
Not an easy place to go, and we will have to improve on our last performance to get anything out of this game, consistency  both on and off the field is now needed if we are to stay comfortably away from the drop zone.
   What do you think?
What would be your line up?
How many will travel midweek in February?
Lots to discuss, please have your say.

I always fear when their No.10 plays for Walsall, he ran the show at the Keepmoat, he has to be one of the best players in league1, he was great when he was at Peterborough, he's only about 5'4". I'd love him to play for us.

We made it very easy for him in the 0-3 loss, that was a shambolic collapse from the whole side. We were the best side for 60 minutes, Oztumer did nothing, then we gifted them three goals and lost.

Oztumer did nothing!!!  You're joking, even if you didn't go to the game then the highlights would show how much he was involved with the result. He was outstanding.

We made substitutions, I think  it was Mandeville and Baudry came off.
Mandeville was staying up front, and keeping a defender out of midfield,Baudry was having a good game at the back. Within 15 minutes we were 3-0 down and Chambers and Otzumer had taken over midfield with Rodney running about like a lost child, and our defence being pulled all over the place.

Jimmy,
I made the same statement to my brother after the Peterborough game, that's the game where we had to look in to the blinding sun, Oztumer was magnificent and I thought we would be interested in signing him.

I was at the game, nevermind the highlights. Like I say, if not for us gifting them three goals he would have been deemed to have had a quiet afternoon. I think he's a wonderful player, he decimated us in that 4-0 loss at Peterborough two seasons ago (what a miserable afternoon all round, pouring rain and shoved in that horrible old stand) but I was not impressed by anyone in the Walsall team in that 3-0 loss the other month.

Oztumer was a substitute at Blackpool on Saturday, now he would be a good addition to our midfield in the closed season if he plays other games the way we have seen him play against us.
It makes one wonder, what is he doing at Walsall, and why he is a substitute, he has been class every time he has played against us.

Out of contract in the summer.  Doubt many Championship sides would show an interest due to his size. Very good player but not room for him and Copps you would think.....

as i've said many times Rovers got a charity (freebie goals) result against Blackburn and the returned the complement against this lot -   after Rovers reciprocated with a charity gift result . Might be an idea to stick a £1 on 3-0 to rovers and run it ALL on to a Blackburn 3-1 win at the Keepmoat stranger things have happened -- funny how Rovers are suddenly getting the late goals (no moaning now)

There is no way we should have lost 0-3 vs Walsall that day.  2 defensive errors and a midfield slip.  They took those chances, we didn't..

Bristol Rovers were far better than Walsall, and even then 1-3 flattered them.

We are due a win that's for sure!

I would love to see us set up better from the start tomorrow.

Lawlor
Mason Anderson Boyle Amos ( Amos cannot be worse than Rowe in that position )
McCullough Houghton
Copps Rowe Kiwomya
Marquis

I feel that line up would give us a more solid and stable side with and actual Left back despite his age.

McCullough alongside Houghton should make us more solid defensively.
An away fixture will probably suit Kiwomya better too as he is more likely to be able to use his pace to get behind the opposition.
Charlton were sitting back on Saturday so AK was never going to get the chance to do so in that game.

No but it appears Fergie has little faith in him.

Amos is out on loan now.

Baudry will be on the bench tomorrow which is great news because we need him back in that defence.

Forgot about the loan, Garrett then we can't keep playing Rowe there it's a waste of talent and Mason is better on the right.

Agree there, Garratt would come in for me and I wouldn't even consider playing Blair in a diamond again. Don't know how many more times he will persist with that useless formation, it doesn't benefit any of our players.

Can’t leave out Beestin surely? He’s been excellent lately and is in the team on merit.

I’d agree with the consensus and bring Garratt in at left back and play McCullough alongside Houghton in the middle.

Why not put Baudry on the right of a back four, he  brings the ball out well and is a right sided player, and good in the air.
Garrett gives us balance, and allows Rowe to be pushed forward where he is a danger.
                                    Lawlor
                   Baudry Anderson  Boyle Garrett
                            McCollough   Houghton
              Coppinger              Rowe         Whiteman
                                    Marquis
  Subs.
Kongolo, May Beestin, Mason, Kiwomya, Marosi,Alcock

Beestin has had a lot of football lately, struggled a little at Portsmouth and Walsall's strength is in midfield, where we have to match them up, this is the team I would pick for this fixture, not the one I expect to play.

Why play him out of position? If he’s fit he should come back in at CB, with Mason at full back.

Because I think he would be better than Mason in that position, He is a better defender, and a better distributer of the ball, plus the two loanees have done OK for me in both games, and although they have only played two games together it is two games more than Baudry has with either.
Sorry for the double posting, and I forgot Matt Blair, and would have him as a substitute instead of Alcock, as Blair and Mason can cover in an emergency at Right back.

Square pegs in round holes is one of the biggest problems at the moment. Baudry will probably be on the bench but if and when he is fit to start it absolutely needs to be at centre half. He's not quick enough to play full back anyway.

Agreed. We can see it why can’t DF see it. I have never seen a manager who changes a team and formation about as much as this guy does. Even after a good performance he changes it. Even when no one was injured he changes it.
Can someone tell me why he does it because I am at a total loss for a reason.
