Because they couldn't afford him, he had talks with sheff united and Bradford before signing for us and had just scored 21 goals.
They didn't just think a 21 goal striker wasn't good enough.

So you think he would have chosen to leave Swindon for Rovers had he not been pushed out?

I heard what tipped the balance in Williams’s mind was the reputation our fans have for indefatigable optimism and positive thinking about the club.

BST, I take it that was a dig at me. I was waiting for it, you never let me down!

Now, if you think your extra blind optimism and unflagging positive thinking about everything Rovers makes you a better, albeit more deluded supporter than me then congratulations! I can live with your delusion!

Wasn’t a dig at all B.B.  It was an attempt to inject a tiny bit of self-deprecating humour into what seemed like yet another sterile Saturday evening thread.

Self-deprecating because I have rarely had a positive or blindly optimistic thing to say about Williams while he’s been here.

PS. I decided to go the humour route rather than try to join in the guessing game because I’m struggling to think of a single player in the history of football who has chosen to leave a club at which he was a first choice and wanted,  to join a club that was lower in the league and take a pay cut in doing so. Which is where the specification had got to, I think.

My apologies then BST. It seems you actually agree with me, for once. Mind you, I would have greatly appreciated you to swallow some pride and actually say you agree with me, for once!

BB

I agree with you. You have identified a class which has no entries and successfully challenged people that they wouldn’t be able to find any examples.

Needed a bit of goalpost shuffling but you got there in the end.

Well, that soon degenerated didn't it. Shame we can't talk sensibly and stick to discussing the merit of a footballer.

He’s a quality player. I was surprised Peterborough let him go to Walsall. Doubt he would cost a fortune but weather we have any money to spend is debatable.

Out of contract at the end of the season I believe

Well in that case if i was Ferguson I’d be doing everything I could to sign him in the summer... did he play for fergy at Peterborough??. With several  high earners off the wage bill in the summer we will be in a good position to strengthen the squad in the summer.

Yeah. Fergie gave him his chance in FL. After Fergie went he fell out of contention for a while.

RedJ, you're absolutely right. If geographical location was the yardstick, he'd probably sign for a Turkish club, and it'd be a damned sight warmer than here.

He's been at two Turkish clubs

think u should all read "the truth" about Williams   note the words inflated wages

http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/Person.asp?PersonID=WILLIAM4

"After the game, and with his contract set to expire, Williams admitted that although he would like to stay at the County Ground, the decision was probably out of his hands - and as one of the last remaining members of the side brought in by Paolo di Canio on      inflated wages,       he was never likely to be offered a new deal. A move to Sheffield United fell through when boss Nigel Clough was sacked, and then Williams was believed to have turned down a move to Scunthorpe having passed a medical - his release from the County Ground confirmed in a statement on the club’s website, thanking everyone for an “amazing rollercoaster” of three years at the club, and saying that Swindon would always hold a place in his heart, not least as the birthplace of his first child. The following day, Williams signed for Doncaster on a three-year deal."
