Prison officers/service
« on April 08, 2018, 07:21:44 pm by balbyrover »
What are everybody’s thought on prison officers and the prison service on a whole?
Would you regard it as a good job? Would you work or has anybody worked for the prison service on here..

Just after a bit of advice really

Makes me wonder who the actual prisoner is
I know people who love it but certainly not something I could do

Not in a lifetime, even if it was the last job on earth.

You seem quite decided.
Why so strong ?

I know people in the service and those that have escaped. I had considered it as a career for a long time but seen and heard horror stories. For the pay its just not worth it.

The private sector is awfull, there are 89 prisoners on a wing at Doncatraz and 3 officers, they make your life a misery, the pay is rubbish and the prisoners virtually run the place.
HMPS is better 3 k a yer more but still peanuts, my brother in law joined 25 years ago on 14k, new starters get 18 k today.
Don't bother unless you really need a job.

Yes I would tend to agree with that , I've know 3 people either in it or in one case retired from it who I think went in with great intentions only for that to turn to disenchantment .

However we do need prison officers and if it is perhaps your dream to do it then I would say give it a try but get out as soon as you feel it isn't right for you.
Good luck for the future fella btw I also know teachers , nurses and police officers who aren't happy with their lot either .

Thanks for comments guys. By the way it would be HMPS I am referring to. The starting salary is 22k including your shift allowance. Still peanuts for what It is but then again when anybody can apply without no qualifications or anything I don’t think you can expect much more...

Yes they raised it recently on account of the fact that no one was joining and they had let 3,000 older staff retire early, thinking they could replace them.
A bit like the Armed Forces really.

Like anything government run i guess.
Hopefully it’s a career rather than just a job.

My dad has worked in the prison service for over 25 years and says the job has totally changed, I was tempted to join myself but my dad said it’s not worth it for all the crap and abuse you have too deal with now

I would go for it as you can easily increase that wage up to £ 23,500 working 41 hrs.a week . You get 25 days holiday a year and a good pension scheme  .

Yes the job may have changed but that's a good starting salary. If you have good self- discipline, can command authority and are a good listener it might be just right for you.

I only say that as you seem fairly determined, good luck with your interview and career if it comes off  - come back and let us know how it pans out balby ok ? If you prefer dogs to people how about becoming a dog- handler ?

Well you can only comment on what you see..I know someone who is a prison officer and has been for a number of years. He plays the system and spends what seems about half the year on the sick on full pay while accumulating a really good pension and he's been doing it for years,he says everybody does it..Whether that's true or not I cant say but I know he does..I've never seen anything like it or how he gets away with it but he does..

Doncaster Prison has an open day on Friday Balby good opportunity to have a look around and then you can compare the private sector to the Public.

Is it local or do you have to move.
