Does anyone have any info on sand (stone) caves that were around Balby - I’m sure I can remember my Grandparents telling me about these when I was younger
I may of course have imagined it
Also seem to recall something about a train disaster
Thanks guys

There have been a few articles in the Free Press about the tunnels over the years. I think that there was a book as well a few years ago. Try the library in town, they might have a copy.
There have actually been two bad train crashes at Balby Bridge. I think that the last one was in 1946. I have a letter somewhere sent from the Great Northern Railway to my dad. They gave him £2:2s (2 guineas) for his help in pulling people from the wreckage and ruining his suit in the process. Hope this helps.

Google Sandhouse and you’ll find all you need to know. I’ve got the book on it and it’s criminal that it was all filled in. They often do talks around town on it and it think they are going to do a play about it at Cast in the near future.

I used to live on Victoria Street next to where the Sandhouse was, where the high rise flats are now.
