Shouldn’t these kids be given top marks for initiative and problem solving? And doesn’t this raise questions as to what we should be teaching kids and assessing them on? In the modern world, isn’t it more important to be able to find, assess and use information and to solve problems, rather than memorise things that technology can do for us?

Without a doubt, they are showing more common sense the the people teaching them

Fully agree. My accounting exams were pen and paper.  I think I've done it once in real life when systems failed.  Everything is computerised now.

Train kids in automation, programming etc.

Train kids in finding information, assessing it and using it to draw robust conclusions and solve problems. That is what we need if we are going to cope with the technological revolution.

Instead, Michael-f**king-Gove’s syllabus has got my kids memorising Henry the f**king VIII’s wives and being able to spot conditional sub-f**king-junctives in sentences. That’ll go a long way to helping us sort out the Brexit shambles he’s left us with.

I have been a GCSE Physics examiner for over 20 years. I couldn't believe it when having to remember formulae was reintroduced for this year's examinations. We rely on rote learning more than any other country in Europe. As has been said any jerk can remember a formula - it can be looked up in seconds if needed. What you understand about applying it is what matters.
