What is Alfie May’s best position ??
« on August 10, 2018, 04:12:09 pm by sha66y »
Alfie May,  May be the “ marmite” of DRFC, but I feel this could be his year to shine, however that is fully dependant upon utilising his effectiveness...

What is Alfie’s best position under the new GM style of play being adopted...

If you don’t rate him, at least qualify the statement you make, bearing in mind we have a blank canvass and the manager sees his abilities...

How on earth can we qualify any statements of how Alfie plays in any position under the current regime when he hasn’t played a competitive game yet under McCann.

I love the lads heart and he seems a good personality but can you qualify why you think it is his year to shine? What progress have you seen him make in his game that makes you think that?

I don’t see him getting any more chances or goals than he did at the beginning of last season, he is still light weight and not as fast as he first appears. His touch is also not great. I really hope he proves me and the other doubters wrong but I just don’t see it happening.

Coming in of the left wing I can’t see him playing directly through the middle, in my opinion he could do with watching a few of Billy sharps old games and picking up a few things on how a small striker should be more effective

AOTN - agreed. He has potential but from last years performances, he seems to have stumbled. Adding extra to his game, watching Billy and other similar players and seeing what works for him would be the way. Hopefully he is someone GM can grab hold of and inspire and mature as a player and a person (no direct criticism of him there, but at his age it really is the time to focus on what is the bread and butter time of his career).

Filo, even I think that is harsh, coming in from the left, he has to improve his first touch and take a shot earlier.
Concentrate on short bursts across his marker and get goal side instead of longer runs. He can be an impact player and would probably look better with a more static target man than Marquis where he could live off knockdowns,  and stop coming short where he is not quick enough, and play off the shoulder.
I hope he comes good, I really do, but in the new system it will be hard.

I like Alfie. Great attitude and work rate, I personally think he’s best in a 2 up front with big John as partner. He didn’t have the best season but was injured and don’t forget where he came from. I think he’s done himself proud to play at this level and managed was it 6 goals in limited appearances? I’d bring him off the bench to start with and see how he does. Good luck Alfie lad !!! ⚽️😀👍

Is will tell you, he is best spinning of the last defender and slotting it in past the keeper

I agree his finishing is not brilliant but this type of chance is his best situation.

Unfortunately under Fergie we were painfully slow in build up play and had nobody capable of playing incisive, well times through balls. I think Taylor may have that in his locker.

he might even play off Mallik wilks with Mallik being fast and breaking down the wing and May going through the middle, I don't think defences will be able to cope with that

Looks like the general consensus is on the shoulder of the last defender, I agree forget about chasing back leave that to JM stay tight up front keep on the move between the 2 central defenders, who picks him up you or me = confusion

Alfie has pace and he is good at pressing and harassing defenders, this forces errors for others around him to capitalise on. He needs to play alongside another striker and with a midfield that can push forward. If our new gaffer gets us playing in the style he is alluding to then for me Alfie May has a role to play. This season could make or break him at this level.

I'd love one cowgirl, let alone a reserve

See....i knew there were fellow Alfie May fans out there who can actually see him fitting into this new faster instinctive style that I envisage,
Thats why I think this could ( underlined) be his season...an impact player that can turn defences already on the back foot from prolonged attacks ....
and I’m sure that GM and his team have had him out there till midnight practicing turn and shoot ....
Good to see others see what I saw, and good to know that we may see more of him being effective in his own way ...

Off the bench as an impact player last 20 to keep others fresh

Agree, although I fear that any learning curve may be too steep given his age and the limited footballing development that he had before joining us. In my experience, where late developers have come into league football they've usually had a single attribute that's marked them out e.g. blistering pace. In Alfie's case he undoubtedly has a bigger heart than many but I'm not sure that's enough or even counts as an attribute. What might help him is a loan move where he gets to work alongside or under someone who can help him hone his game and become excellent at his good points.

Speaking of May, couldn't help but smile at today's bible reading, though it could be building-up May a bit too much:

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
