Gordon Morritt
« on November 21, 2018, 03:18:06 pm by AlonzoDrake »
Just discovered that Rovers goalkeeper Gordon Morritt has died aged 76. Rovers manager George Raynor signed Morritt after the traumatic 1966/67 season. Raynor rebuilt the team in 1967/68 and brought in Morritt to steady the ship along with Aiken, Wilcockson, Clish, Rabjohn and Johnson. He was more than a capable keeper, and recall he made some remarkable saves at times (along with a few bloopers). Here's a 67/68 team pic including Morritt. How many players can you identify?

The player to the right of Keith Mottershead on the front row is Tommy Aiken, who came to Belle Vue from Ballymena. He was a very talented and tricky winger, but his career was almost ended after a vicious tackle at BV v Crewe on Boxing Day, 1967. He was never the same player after that, and sadly seems to be forgotten.

Always sad to hear of a hero's death.

I think Morritt may have been the 'keeper at my first Rovers game - County Cup Final v. Rotherham about '68. A 1-0 win. Can't find a team line up for that match anywhere. Could have been Tubby Ogston, but my money is on Morritt.

Jimmy Golze is a mate of mine; that's him next to the end at the right hand side of the first row.

Gordon played in the semi final and replay of 67-68 County Cup against Sheff Utd  but not the final which was against Barnsley . John Gavan was in goal for that game
I have  a book which lists all County Cup line ups , scorers etc if anyone is interested

I remember being in the Scala club one night with Malcolm Refern who played for Rovers intermediates and reserves. Keith Mottershead, John Gavan and Stuart Mason came in. They were all good lads.
