Probably Lewis Hamilton competing in a sport that’s open to all
Hamilton started in karts paid for and repaired by his dad, he had dreams of formula 1 and made it, same as an 8 year old playing football in the park dreaming of playing in the world cup.

Not disputing he is s talented driver and his story is as much a testament to his fathers hard work - however there are not many 8 year olds racing karts, particularly not in the park

There is also a team award don't forget which I would expect the England World Cup squad to get a look in for. Although I reckon that will go the Ryder Cup squad.

I'm not saying he won't win it Hound. I'm saying it would be a bit embarrassing if he did. If our expectations are really that low that the best sportsman we have is the captain of a team that came fourth in the world.

Geraint Thomas is the obvious one.

I saw what you wrote.
Strictly speaking you said that Thomas would be the obvious one but you didn’t say that he would be your choice.

I have also had another look st what you put in the first part of your above post.
This vote is about the sports personality of the year, not about who is the best sportsman.

Does the winner of the award have to be someone whose team won something.
In the case of England, they went considerably further in the World Cup than many people thought they would do.
Surely that in itself was an achievement.

Beckham and Michael Owen are examples of footballers who won the SPotY award without winning anything.
Greg Rusedski got it for reaching a grand slam tennis final, which he lost.
Gaza won it after inspiring England to a WC semi final.

It isn’t just about Kane being part of a team that finished fourth in the World.
The description of the award is actually awarded to “the person whose actions have most captured the public’s imagination”.

Should've been Harry Maguire in that case imo. What a bloke.

Fair dos Hound.

I'd always assumed the "Personality" thing was an anachronism but yep, given that description, you're probably right.

TBF, I didn’t know myself until I looked at the list of previous winners and saw the requirement for the winner.

One of my pet hates in life is when people think that because it’s called Sports Personality of the Year means it’s judged on people’s personality. A personality is also a celebrity or famous person.

I was most amused when Zara Phillips won it because she's posh and her mum won it many years ago.

Geraint Thomas ought to win it this year although Hamilton will probably win it.

Calling someone out as being posh and using the phrase “most amused” in the same sentence - good work!

Agreed, mostly used in recent years when the much-maligned Andy Murray has won it, even though he is legitimately one of the most successful sportsmen in recent British history.
