Who in the Tory party thought it was a good PR move to start sending their MPs to open foodbanks? Are they just taking the p*ss now or what?

They probably see foodbanks as a glowing tribute to rolling back the welfare state.

If you want to privatise public services, then handing the baton to charities is one way to do it.

No disrespect to those good people running foodbanks, btw.
Some great people just responding to need as it has been created.

They are spinning the narrative the foodbanks are a good thing, because it means people are coming together to help out the needy. Of course, it ignores the point that under this government, there are more needy people out there than ever before.

Foodbanks are a great cause and anyone involved, even if it's just dropping in a tin of beans every now and then, should feel good about themselves. However, it is a national disgrace that they are necessary in this country.

According to the Trussell Trust, their foodbank usage (3-day emergency food supplies given to people in crisis) has risen from 346,992 in 2012/2013 to 1,332,952 in 2017/2018 ! (the actual total number will be much higher, due to more foodbanks in operation that aren't opearted by Trussell)

There's been a 52% increase where Universal Credit has been rolled out! (you can't blame that on Labour)

Agree with the universal credit bit but that should hopefully be a short term thing,they should not have introduced it till it was ready, so in therory once they have sorted them issues out the use of food banks should drop considerably

Universal credit started to be rolled out in 2013, how long are you going to keep making excuses for this useless bunch of miserable bas**rds bp.

What BJW has quoted you isn't a 52% rise during the transition to Universal Credit - it's where Universal Credit has been in place for a year or more! The areas that have yet to see Universal Credit have also had a rise although 'only' 13%.

As I said to the future Mrs Wilts Rover the other day: 'MP's doing photo calls at foodbanks, May touring the country and the tv studios, challenging Corbyn to a leaders debate - I reckon she is going to call an election'.

Alot of mps including labour ones think univrsal credit is a good idea there just were not ready to roll it out as people were waiting several weeks for there money which is wrong, so thats what i mean about short term,

If she loses the vote on Tuesday a General Election is quite possible. It might be May's only chance of getting her MPs behind her. Certainly it would concentrate some minds in the Tory party.

Although you could end up with the odd spectacle of Tory MPs voting against their own Government's motion to suspend Parliament.

If the vote is lost, don't expect the Tories to support a no confidence motion if it's brought by Labour.  History tells us they will do what they can to stay in power.

They have. Although they were sounding keen on a GE earlier in the week they seem to have rowed back from that position.
