Lawler or Marosi
« on December 23, 2018, 10:36:08 pm by Campsall rover »
As mentioned on the Danny Andrew thread. So let’s have a proper thread for our goalkeepers.
For me the big difference is Lawlers distribution is far better than Marosi’s.
I think Lawler is better on crosses although he punches the ball when i think he should at times be catching the ball.
Marosi is very reluctant to come off his line in a crowded penalty area.
Both are very good shot stoppers.
So overall Lawler wins it for me. But it is what GM thinks that counts and he sees them in training day in day out not us.

Marosi is, just about, the better keeper for me. I really think they're both very similar ability-wise and are both more than good enough for this level.

Neither; both good reserve keepers. Need a proper keeper to go up and stay up. Fact .

Lawlor by a mile. Goals against record proves that of late

.... but playing devils advocate ( a phrase I hate and have never ever used before) how much of that is down to Lawlor and how much to the defence that seems to have tightened up of late

Is it that each i.e. Lawlor inspires the Defensive unit and that the Defensive unit protects him more as well ?

My preference is Marosi purely because he will claim the ball by catching it as opposed to Lawlor who’s first instinct is to try and punch it despite it being catchable height - I can understand why Lawlor does that because the modern ball is so light it deviates in the air. On balance though I’d much prefer the keeper catch it than punch/flap at it.

On balance Marko is my choice but the manager has been proven to be right dropping Marko and putting Lawlor in who has been excellent ever since - Marko seemed to be struck by a loss of confidence probably down to the teams collective loss of form - we are indeed fortunate to have two good young keepers

Both decent keepers but Marosi for me. He catches better and Lawlor has the ability to make an absolute howler. It’s a good dilemma for McCann to have

Funny how we see it different. For me Lawlor is the one rooted to his line and will not attempt to catch crosses unless he's unchallenged. He breeds panic where Marosi is the more calmer of the two however its true that we have conceded less while Lawlor has been in.

I still prefer Marosi as at least he attempts to catch the ball which for me is essential for a keeper.

Lawlor had one moment at the weekend that was horrendous - he came to punch (not a big fan of punching but appreciate that sometimes it's necessary) and he actually punched it down into the ground rather than up and out. Didn't cause issues fortunately but he's 24 years old with 50+ professional appearances under his belt so it's not like you can put it down to naivety.

He's a fantastic shot stopper but woeful at commanding his area or catching the ball, and I've not seen any improvement in that side of his game since he's been with us.

For me GM sees them every day.  The way he has played it is just right for me.  He seems to be playing who he thinks is in form which for me is the right way to do it.

It really gets me when keepers lose form and just keep getting played because they’re (for example Joe Hart). I know some keepers are happy to be number two’s I would suggest most aren’t.
If you’re a midfielder and lose form you get dropped and that’s the way it should be

Marosi for me.

Lawlor always seems to have a calamity in him, like punching for no reason, and short passes to defenders with opposition strikers bearing down.

Lawlor is better for me but I do think it’s an area we could improve. Both good back up keepers in my humble opinion.

At this level, completely happy with either. Lawlor has the shirt for now and the manager and coaching staff see both every day.

I had a conversation with Andy Butler last season and asked him who he prefers and he gave me a politically correct answer and said that Lawlor was still learning but I got the impression he prefers Marosi behind him.

As a centre half, having a good keeper who's calm and predictable is essential. When Sully arrived on the scene years ago he made a massive difference. Similar to Sam Johnstone who commanded his area. Karl Ikeme was another who caught the ball with ease and calmed things down.

DBR, I see it completely the other way round to you. For me, Lawlor is the least erratic but I do agree with Mush, we ought to be signing a better keeper if we have designs on the Championship!

No body else has mentioned distribution. This is a very important part of goal keeping in the modern game.
The overall consensus seems very split on who is the better keeper and i think there is very little to choose between them.
Lawlor’s distribution is much more decisive which does help with setting up fast counter attacking football and i think that could be the main reason why Lawlor has the shirt at the present.

Both on par for league 1 with Lawlor edging it at the moment but not championship standard. If we went up the Gillingham keeper is on a free, seems very highly rated .

We are just very very fortunate to have 2 keepers that most clubs would love to have in there team just enjoy them both who ever is in the team

I think some people think Lawlor is automatically better because we paid a fee to Manchester City for him whereas Marosi was signed on a free after being released by Wigan.

Tough to pick who is the better keeper really.
Earlier in the season Marosi won us some crucial points with superb saves and that seems to have been forgotten.
Nothing much between them.

He said that when he first joined. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s had a rethink and strengthens in the summer.

ok

Christmas homework for someone what are the stats for saving penalties - hopefully the stats will exclude when the penalty taker misses or hits the post
