Thanks for the complement knockers, I didn't take it as a dig at all, and was just replying to your question.
The only problem with doing it the way I do is looking back at notes on players who have gone on to do well at other clubs we had no interest in at the time or were too good for us anyway, only about 50% went on to do well though, and I picked quite a few no marks who were never heard of again.

Why would someone choose a Team battling relegation (lets say Scunny as an example) rather than a Team with on the face of it a "fighting chance" of making the Play offs (lets say Rovers as an example)

Always amuses, and puzzles me a little, when folk get a bee on their bonnets about certain players. There could be any number of reasons why McCann is no longer perusing a target. It could be the target is just not interested in signing for us! You can speculate all you want whether said player is right ot wrong for us, it doesn't change things, it ain't happening. (As far as we can possibly know).

It would be naive to think McCann isn't capable of assessing and reassessing the make up of the squad and be in dialogue with contacts within the game to do the necessary groundwork to improve the overall quality.

It is out of our control. Just like the Mandeville/McCullough situation. Let it go and trust the manager to do what he has far more expertise in than we have.

For example, a few years ago we were rumoured to be stitched on to be signing a certain player who ended up at a local rival. After the event, I asked a certain official why it didn't happen, not really expecting a reply however I learned it was due to the agent insisting on a fee that was so disproportionate to the deal itself, the club just wouldn't entertain it. Jog on!

We cannot assume things are so simple. BTW, said player didn't live up to expectations so the clubs judgement was vindicated.

Was that Kevin van Veen by any chance?

Nope, but there were similar rumours about that one too!

Ah, I heard we were unwilling to pay his agent's fee, which is why I thought it was him. Who was it, out of interest? Surely not Jean-Yves M'Voto.

I've still never forgiven SOD for not signing my man Issou Dao.

Not a bad shout that, Red; and there was another one that Barnsley snatched from under our nose, James Bailey.

We had the last laugh though, they both turned out to be crap.

The players Barnsley have snatched off us last few years have all been gash.

I'll take that.

That's the point, you have to say the clubs judgement is sound and ethical. So, if we've walked away from a deal there's normally a damn good reason. Just accept it and move on.

Anyway, let's hope the players are properly rested and raring to go. We don't want a repeat of the Boxing Day massacre!

Certainly dont !

I have often posted similarly to you. We on here may be experts in many fields - some may even be Managers of local Sunday League Teams - but it is probably fair to say none of us a Pre Football Managers and so as such have to place our trust in those that are

I always bow to the experience brought to the Club by their "chosen man" even when sometimes it is not working out as it did not with our ex-Manager

For example we have discussion , praise  , criticism and Polls re our 2 Keepers and everyone has a view on here yet the view that counts for me is the one held by GM and his Team and that at the moment seems to be working ok - and thats good enough for me

(Sorry for the first No S**t Sherlock statement of 2019 - but I am sure someone will beat it before the week is out !)

Accept Jason Shakell who was one of the best centre backs we have ever had.

Bit of a stretch to call 2010 "the last few years" I think though.

Well to me when someone says last few years I'd think 4-5 years back. So probably summer of 2013 (okay that's 6 but it's 5 seasons ago).

What can you say about that performance? absolutely every player played their part in a great win. Great goals a couple of which (Coppinger's and Crawford again) should be up for the goal of the month. Two of the best defensive tackles in the area of the season, and quick passing movements that would have graced the divisions above.
And Wilks giving a display of close control running with the ball as good as I have seen for a long time.
Rochdale especially in the first half were completely outclassed, their goalkeeper keeping the score down with two outstanding saves, one from Wilks being world class, a complete contrast from his mistake in the second half spilling a shot from Marquis in the net.
They set up strangely in the first half, their central defenders dropping off behind three including the full backs, giving our wide players oceans of space behind the full backs, very strange, and not surprisingly changed to a more orthodox set up after the interval, but too late to change anything.
The best football of the season from us, anyone who was not entertained today, well there cannot have been anyone, we were great, carry that on and there is not much we cannot acheive at this level.

A team performance. Anyone spot any weak links?

5 goals and it could have been more. 5 star performance indeed.

Agreed. Wow, I can't recall a more comprehensive performance at home. May be the 5-1 v Southend.

It had everything and some quality on top! Every player, played their part and for once most things came off.

One of the best moves of the lot was when Crawford nearly chipped the keeper.

Talking of which, what a dead ball delivery, where has that been?Crawford showed his credentials today and along with Wilks, probably their best performances in a Rovers shirt to date. Whiteman was also immense today.

Crawford was recognised as a free kick specialist when he came from Scotland and was touted as such when he signed for us.

Crawford is getting better by the game. He is growing into the team no doubt about that. Can see why GM signed him.
What a fantastic free kick. If that had been in the Premier league we would never hear the end of it.
Tommy Rowe is not being missed so that is a huge compliment to Crawford’s recent performances.

Sadlier must be salivating at the thought of getting into this side after the last two games.
