He only said that after slightly reducing the depth of cuts planned on public spending this year.

We had a shocking recession in 08/09. Standard economics gives you techniques to kick start growth after a hit like that. What you want is several years of above average growth to make up the lost ground.

That happened after every post war recession. Up until this one.

Our long term average growth from 1950 to 2008 was 2.3% per year. We've topped that in only one year under the Tories.

Out GDP is now about 10% lower than it would have been if we'd got back to average growth, never mind made up some of the lost ground. That's nearly £1trn of wealth we've deliberately given up over the past decade.
