Wilks for Marquis

I love Marquis but I'm of the opinion that he'll be off in the summer regardless of what league we're in. So the question is do we then go and give the money we get for him to Leeds for Wilks?

I’d love us to keep Wilks anyway but hes not a replacement for Marquis.

I’d rather cross that bridge when we come to it.

Why would Marquis leave? He’s not guaranteed football at a bigger team and after being on loan for many seasons he found a home here and is one of the hubs of the team. Playing time I imagine would be foremost in his mind.

I don’t think he will leave at the end of this season. I would imagine his drop of form would have only put suitors off.

That being said he has played a lot of minutes this season so he will naturally be more fatigued and less sharp.

3 potential reasons (in no particular order):

1. The opportunity to test himself in the Championship
2. Money
3. The possibility of moving back down South

Still think there’s little point debating possible replacements when he’s still here but let’s be realistic, there is a chance that he could move on in the summer.

Marquis wouldn't get anywhere near Leeds first team and why would Leeds swap Wilks for Marquis, when Wilks is a far better prospect

Marquis as penalty taker does not fill me with confidence, there has got to be someone better in the team at taking pens.

He took a good penalty today. Sent the keeper the srong way and stroked it home, What's not to like?

Wilks would be a great signing - but we would need a ‘new’ Marquis-style player IF he did leave.

The number of times he’s missed from the spot worries me. He sent the keeper the wrong way this time, but watch closely on the highlights he doesn’t actually hit it well at all

Keeper guesses right and it’s a crap penalty.. he gets it wrong and it’s a cool finish..

Unlike the Harry Kane style of penalty..

I will never agree that penalties like that are “a cool finish”. Today it’s just fortunate the keeper goes the wrong way, but he’s missed several before when the keeper has guessed right. If he’s going to be our penalty taker he needs to practice and ultimately take better penalties.

EDIT - I should add that I’m delighted to see him back on the scoresheet today and pleased that he still has the confidence to take penalties. But if he takes his penalties like that he will probably miss 1 in 3 which could cost us at some stage.

Marquis and at least one other Rovers player have registered themselves with the dentist in Bawtry this week

I don't know where he will go. Realistically I can't see him signing a new contract with us so I think we will kind of be forced to cash in on him this summer. I'd love to be wrong and see him stay though.

Why are people talking as though Marquis has become the main penalty taker? He hasn't, the main penalty taker is Ben Whiteman. John was just stepping up in his absence.

Why would we be forced to cash in.?

We may choose to cash in, but I don’t think our club is in such dire circumstances as to have to sell.?

I think his point was that if he doesn't fancy a new contract, we may have to look at selling him to get a fee, rather than losing him for nothing the following summer.

Didn't sadlier score a boat load of penalties last season?

Just because he “just rolled the ball into the net” doesn’t mean it was a bad pen.
He might have done what lots of players do these days, that is wait for the last split second, wait for the keeper to move one way then roll the ball into the opposite side of the goal.
A bit like Stock did in the Southend play off semi final.
Because it was in front of the away end it is hard to tell.

Marquis will leave if he can get more money elsewhere and potentially play at a higher level or for a "bigger club"
He's proved his commitment to our cause so I'd personally wish him well

I just hope if he does go it's done early so we can get a suitable replacement    It would be awful if it was done late and we were left behind

I got a sense from his. Comments after the Jan transfer window was kind of "yes I like and respect the club and had no intention of going anywhere no matter the offer. If in the summer it suits though and rovers don't go up then yes I will be listening to offers and go if the right one comes ideally in the championship. Mccann essentially said if that happens and works for all then he's likely to go if we don't go up.

Like others, although we don't have to I think BW will be high on champ radars if we don't go up as well.

We can't complain though as the owners have openly said this is how they want the club to run to a degree.

I guess if mccann said I've got a replacement then they'll sell.

I know what you mean, but that would depend on whether the club thinks it is better to do that, and replace him, or have his services for the next season.

Whatever happens in the summer, I think marquis has been superb for our club. We wouldn’t be here in league 1 and potential playoffs without him. Thanks John and good luck to him wherever his destiny leads him 👍⚽️😀
