Serious Question?
« on April 01, 2019, 07:41:07 pm by sha66y »
I’m sure there are a few that don’t think this team is ready to face the bigger boys in the league above..

So!....Who doesn’t want us to scrape into the championship this term?

and more importantly...WHY???

Think about the ramifications before you holler!

I’m not sure I do...
Reason being that I’d like to see this team truly develop, and another term in league 1 could really strengthen our position for promotion....

If we do go up, I feel it would be a torrid time, ..( but hope I’d be wrong)

I personally believe with 2 or 3 quality signings that Donny would be fine in the championship! Let’s face it ,we are in a mini championship currently anyway with the quality around us in the top 6 . Just my opinion of course 😀

You're probably right on that sha66y.  To have any chance going up with this team there would need to be substantial strengthening to the squad and then would likely take time to find its feet.  Improve the team whilst in L1 so it can evolve into a Championship standard side.

I don’t think anyone would turn down promotion if it comes along.  Rotherham scraped into the Championship last season and are likely to come straight back down, having only recently won their first away match.
Realistically we need another season of improvement and be ready as we were in 2008.

I want us to go up but taking the emotion out of it then for debate purposes...

Cons for promotion:
We are a long way behind the automatic spots suggesting we'd almost definitely go into the season as the weakest team.
We aren't rich, therefore strengthening would be difficult and arguably essential given the point above.
We don't have a massive reputation, see above.

BUT

I would think there will always be 2/3/4 teams in L1 bigger than us so we can't wait for a natural order to take shape.
You can't ever turn down a promotion, it brings with it increased income and exposure.
We'd almost certainly keep Marquis and Whiteman and maybe get Kane again.
Bye to the 3rd round of the FA Cup = potential money spinner
You never know we might get promoted into the Championship at a time when 2/3/4 clubs hit a crisis and we stay up as a result and go on to build.

If we do get back into the Championship it will be hard for us to stay there, whether it it next season, the season after that or the season after that.
However i want us to get back there ASAP.

I would like us to go up, the effort put in deserves it. However just on radio Dee Dah this evening  it was stated that Rotherham's budget was by far the lowest in the division, in fact stated less than half the second lowest.
If true they have over performed, and it does not bode well for any of Barnsley, Rotherham, or ourselves in the future.

We could possibly lose the better players in the squad if we don't go up.
That would make League 1 next season harder than this.
The best way to stay down would be to lose at Wembley. Maximise gate and TV money and possibly players would stay to build the squad for another go.
Go out and hope for the best. I'm sure that the board would have a good idea of how to best use the extra Championship money if we were to go up.

Deffo wouldn’t turn promotion down if offered but would struggle next season without adding players that a given but if don’t go up then think we would need a good few players anyway as can’t see us having Kane or Whiteman next season for starters  if that is the case

I don't get this talk of developing the team further in League One before we're ready to go into the Championship. We don't have the budget to replace star players like Marquis and Whiteman, who I believe would be snapped up if we don't get promoted, and I don't think Kane and Wilks would come back either.

The club should be ready for promotion and I would welcome that.. the team itself will need a stronger squad.

We’d probably be like Rotherham we’d more likely have the smallest budget . We’d be reliant on loans and the loyalty of our more gifted players staying with the club.

You take your chances when they come along. If we had the same first 15 or so players yeah I’d go up next year with a years experience behind them, but that will not be the case.
We stay in L1 it’s goodbye Wilks, Kane, Marquis almost definitely. Whiteman maybe Wright as well.
We’d be starting again.

We won’t necessarily need to sell our contracted players if we stay in league 1, unless we get offers we (the club or the players) can’t refuse.

As a club, I don’t think we need to sell..

You try to take the chances when presented. All footballers and fans alike want to achieve something and celebrate those achievements.

Should we achieve promotion, I'm sure the owners and the manager will do their best to acquire the talent to enhance the squad to compete without putting the club in a sticky situation. In football you have to be prepared to take the rough with the smooth, that's just the nature of the football pyramid.

We surprised many in our previous tenures in the Championship, including staying longer than many thought possible and, snatching relegation from the Jaws of safety in our second visit.

Each time you hope you strengthen the club in terms of infrastructure and finance.

That's right IDM, but we can't stand in the way of players wanting to better themselves.

Traditionally promotions don’t come round that often - so it’s churlish to turn our nose up at going up - if somehow we get promoted we should embrace it & put our faith in our board giving Grant the tools to go out & sign players of requisite quality to give us a fighting chance of staying up -
They’ll be a massive recruitment process required because of our present squad I only see Whiteman having the quality to step up to the next level- possibly along with Joe Wright if he.can regain fitness

I agree with that Branton, but I also think Kane and Wilks will come back if we're promoted.

There's nothing to say Kane will be back here, irrespective of if we're in League One, The Championship or receive a surprise invite to La Liga. It's entirely up to Liverpool.

Wilks may not be playing any football next season.

Exactly, The whole point of competing in any league is to win matches with the goal of promotion.
When the opportunity presents itself grasp it with both hands.
The board will give GM as much budget as they see as sensible. Believe it or not they do want to remain as a Championship club in the long term.
I think we could be competitive in the league above without having a massive budget.
Good managers get the best out of players and i think we have some very talented young players at the club and with the addition of 5/6 Championship standard players we can do well.
We need 1 goal keeper, 2 full backs, 2 centre backs, 2 midfielders and 2 Stikers.
If we go up then, Downing, Kane and Wilks would possibly fill 3 of those positions.
I think we would off load Marosi, Butler, Garrett, Andrews, McCullough, Mandeville, May, & Kiwyoma as imo all would struggle at that level.
As much as i like Blair for his 100% commitment i think he might find the step up a struggle also, but he has another year on his contract.
Lewis and Smith are loans and both are questionable at that level, so will probably go back to their parent clubs.
So we would have and need the following.
Lawler + 1
Amos, Horton, + 2
Wright, Downing, Anderson, Blaney + 1
Blair, Whiteman, Kane, Crawford, Rowe, Coppinger, Hassani + 1
Marquis, Wilks, Sadlier +1

Who is that aimed at Red J as my post is the one before yours. If it’s aimed at me I assume you are being sarcastic as I am always positive.😀

I always said 7th would be ideal. But I don't believe that now. We will lose important players in the summer and can we replace them? Possible we may do and be better off but we have the chance so go for it.

In some ways head tells me we aren't quite there, but the fan and me says let's get it....

To hi-lite a point...
Before this season got underway, many on here thought this team needed a complete revamp, and the likelihood of a top 6 finish was a mere pipe dream...
Then we get a not so popular new Manager who initially shows no signs of buying every available cast off...
Then to cap it all, he introduces a style of play that seems alien in its outright attacking...

My point is this....I think the squad know that we have been fortunate to adapt quickly, but this is most definitely a work in progress scenario...
and to be assured of making an impact in the championship, we would have to be as strong as say Luton....
But we aren’t there yet.....
I dont see why Whiteman or Marquis should leave, and if they did...I have every confidence in GM to replace both with equal if not better assets....

I guess I don’t want to see wholesale changes to a team that has unfinished business to attend to...
