London Fans
« on May 17, 2019, 08:20:09 am by Herbert Anchovy »
I’m unfortunate enough to be living and working in London over the next few months. From conversations I’ve been having at work it seems that the fans of all London clubs (bar Palace) want and expect Charlton to get to Wembley. This really surprised me as I thought that they’d have the ‘local derby syndrome’ where they want their close neighbours to suffer, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, I’ve heard that there’s supporters from other London clubs (including Spurs, West Ham and Chelsea) going along tonight to support Charlton. Also, a fella told me that there were some Chelsea and Arsenal fans at the KM on Sunday who’d travelled up for a day out with their Charlton supporting mates. I must say, all this surprised me a bit.

Maybe I'm different HA , I always want fellow Yorkshire clubs to do well especially against London clubs but not to a point of hatred I can't be arsed.

The fact that Charlton fans have been the victim of de Chatelet Management failings has brought them much support from other fans .

It would be a much needed local derby plus six points in the bag.

doesn't surprise me at all; Charlton have always been a decent sized club and all the London/South East fans who grew up alongside their Hales/Flanagan/Simonsen days knew - when the lost the Valley - that their own (similarly sized) clubs could go the same way - there but for the grace of god, an' all that.

Crucially, since then, they've also been perceived as having their backs to the wall for one reason or another and have garnered if not sympathy then far more tolerance than your usual 'local rivals' would be afforded

Palace fans are - of course - cretins and their opinion on anything should be ignored out of hand...

My lads grew up and live in London and are both West Ham fans. They'll be with me tonight in our end. They'd have to be threatened with castration at gunpoint to even consider going in the Charlton end.

Parenting fail ;) Still, a win tonight and who knows?

Surely parenting success?? They were born and live in London quite rightly support their local team - the hammers - but rovers are always their second club.

This is an exchange today with my cousin a West Ham fan telling me of his daughter’s allegiance with Charlton and my reply .Hi mate ,
We will be outshouted and out supported but we are very experienced at those circumstances and know we just have to play the 11 third tier players on the field not the crowd nor their history as ex Premiership .We are just a pub team having a laugh like when you Ted and I went to Woking .
Love to you and Lorna and I hope they enjoy ...we are happy with our season and the journey is sometimes more pleasurable than the destination.
Luv ,Bri

Hi Bri

I hope both J and yourself, and all the family, are well.

Lorna is at the match tonight - her boyfriend is a Charlton fan and they are going along: I have said she needs to give Donny a shout though

Best

Had a discussion with the lads here while having our snap break. One bloke knows of 4 Chelsea fans going tonight, another knows of 2 Arsenal and another thinks his brother and his Spurs supporting mates are heading to the match too. And the only Hammers fan here is going in a group made up of 2 Charlton and 4 Hammers fans!!

Anyway, I’m finishing here at 3 and heading to Greenwich to meet a minibus full of blokes from Cantley!

Good to hear it works for you. I could never have been taking my lad to see Bristol City, so was relieved when he chose Donny. Taking him to the Conference games since he was tiny probably helped in the brainwashing, and no doubt cemented by experiencing the atmospheres of wins at Cardiff, Wembley, Stoke and v Villa.

Yeh, its not like we're not veterans on the underdog role eh Grainge. Piling a load of part time or no interest fans in for a game can come badly unstuck – especially if we get an early goal. We're playing the Derby role tonight so lets hope for similar outcomes. Cheers all and good luck!!

There'll be one very tense bubble at The Valley tonight.

BRR – my eldest was dragged around god foresaken grounds like Halesowen, Harrogate railway and Leek Town when he was a nipper. He loves the Donny but he got drawn towards the claret and blue by proximity, London family and mates. I like to think they're still with me though if push comes to shove. Cheers and all the best.

Fair do's. The Brizzle teams were hardly glam, plus I never had to contend with a local family influence, that's always going to be a problem. Enjoy the ride tonight!
