The Away Goals Rule

Needs bringing back immediately. No need for penalties and we were at Wembley and no one could have complained!

But would you still say the same if it wouldn't have made us winners last night?

Does anyone seriously think Charltons tactics would have been exactly the same had away goals been in force. They were hardly likely to go all out attack or send the keeper up for a corner with the tie level. Who knows they might have got the winner anyway.

Am not sure that extra time is appropriate and if its level after 90 minutes it should go straight to penalties. The outcome for us would have been the same last night but its unfair for the home team to have the advantage of playing an extra 30 minutes on their own pitch.

I guess the usual counter argument to that is the away team has an extra 30 mins to score an away goal. As that isnt applicable in the playoffs I'd be inclined to agree with you, that is until you remember how who has the 2nd leg at home is decided.

To be fair though that's easily done away with - you just limit away goals to normal time, if you're that arsed a as a competition organiser.

I think the play off semis are fine as they are, giving a small advantage to the higher placed team..  no need for changes IMHO..

To be fair the away goals rule is totally ridiculous, can’t believe they still use it in the Champions League, it’s for a different era where goalkeepers could pick up pass backs, totally irrelevant in today’s game.

Away goals is a stupid rule, it shouldn't be used and in glad it isn't in English football. Sure it's made for some great drama in the Champions League but it really is an outdated system and needs scrapping.

I remember when the Rovers first got involved in away goals. We drew 0-0 with Chesterfield at Belle Vue in the first round of the league Cup and then drew 1-1 at Saltergate. The irony was that it was 1-1 after 90 minutes and the away goal only came into play after extra time. How we got through was a miracle as Chesterfield pounded our goal for the entire extra 30 mins without scoring.

Stupid rule in my opinion and I’d like to see it done away with completely.
