Sunderland wanted to keep him hence asking him to extend his stay

He's been promoted from this league

He played 35 games in a top 6 side for most of the season

He's 3 yrs younger than the left back that's gone elsewhere

Danny Andrews needed coaching to play the way GM likes and so there is no reason why James Reece can't do the same and be an even better player for it.

Lets see where this goes but at least we have someone with calibre behind him, and he has a good back up in Amos as well

I think this will be a good signing. I've been reading the Sunderland forum and it's comical. You'd think they were in the upper tier of the premier League, most of them saying he will be good for league 1. Which division are they in again 🤔🤔😆😆 dossers!!

Yes, I've read the Sunderland forum at times and there's a few fans that are still in denial.

Similar to a few of our own fans who refuse to believe our club is run well and hope the regime fails at earliest opportunity.

Don't know the first thing about him. Wiki says he's 5'7 so let's hope he can jump like a salmon. Always thought the forumla for league one was big buggers.

It didn't hinder Gareth Roberts.

Very happy with this one.  He’s a good age, played most of last season and was only missing the last few games due to injury.

He extended his contract by a year option to stay last week and the papers in Sunderland say it’s a bit of a shock as he was in talks for a two year deal with them this week.

Nice to see us pay a transfer fee too, no idea how much guessing 100-200k?

I'd rather not have to pay a fee but sometimes we have to if it's the right player. Whiteman has proven a sound investment so let's hope this lad too becomes a fans favourite.

I know very little about football dealings, but I get the impression that a "free" player can be as expensive as one that a fee is paid for sometimes.

He couldn’t get into the Sunderland squad at the end of the season. Steady player though. Proven at L1 level.

He was injured...

He was fit. And that is a fact.

He got an automatic year extension due to the number of games he played last season. Sunderland actively wanted rid. He will do a job for us though.

Yes confirmed on Rovers website, that’s two full backs now. 12 players now for first team squad plus U 23s. Another 5/6 at least required permanents or loans doesn’t matter.

Seen as any Sunderland fan replying to the news on Sky and BBC's article are gutted he is leaving it seems to me he is a good signing.... Any negatively seems totally unfounded...

As these things take a little longer than instant, and my impression is that GM does his homework thoroughly on such things like player recruitment. This has been in the pipeline for quite some time. This guy operates from a position of strength and was fully aware that Danny Andrew was a bit flakey hence 'La Voila' instant replacement, quality left back.

On that basis I wouldn't be surprised if one or two more additional pieces to the jigsaw will start to appear to replace the ones going out the door.

Happy with this. Seems a good proven player at this level.

Wonder what the fee was.

When was the last time we paid a fee for a player? Potentially a quality signing this, lots of experience in big L1 teams and shows a statement of intent.

Well the Sunderland Echo disagree with you Gaz:

"James was a regular last season, making 34 appearances in all competitions. He missed the final two months of the campaign due to injury, however, making his last appearance in the Checkatrade Trophy final defeat to Portsmouth."

Good signing for me, right age, experience, lets hope McCann and Bryne can improve him as they did with Andrew?

As long as GM is getting some good players coming in I don't see why anyone has a problem with it. Why should anyone care what a player is paid or what fees we pay, it's not coming out of our own pocket.

GM did a good job last season and probably will do the same this season.

The only thing that matters is the starting line-up for the first game of the season.

As for fake news that GM or Marquis are leaving, why should they have to openly dispel such rumours?

Grant has said RJ was out main target for left back.

Does that mean we were trying to sign up Andrew got back up?

Or did Grant find out RJ wanted to come and that’s the reason he pulled the plug on Andrew?

Sounds like he has a list of 3 or so players for each position and as soon as he hear Andrew wasn't coming he got the main target from his list for left back.

He didn't 'hear' Andrew wasn't coming, it was GM who pulled the plug, following all the protracted dealings with Andrew's agent.

One down, several more to go.

A bit of momentum at last.
