Sadly passed away at age 87, Manchester United paid a world record transfer fee for a keeper to Rovers for his services - RIP Harry

Harry was rightly labelled the hero of Munich pulling 3 players out of the plane wreckage as it crashed on takeoff the were Blanchflower, Violet and of course one Bobby Charlton. The world would’ve been a very different place had he not risked his own life to save others

Must admit I cried once when Manchester United conceded a goal - now I cry with laughter most of the time

Here is the goal if you have never seen this (start at 3 minutes) where he was barged over the line by Boltons Nat Lofthouse in the 57/58 FA Cup Final . Amazing to think of the protection Keepers get today as opposed to then

Because Harry had signed from Rovers I was obviously wanting him to win but that goal finished me off - but I was only 7 at the time

A very sad day indeed. Compare him to some of the simpering posing prima donnas of today.

Condolences to his family. He always came across as a quiet, deep thinking man, but clearly with the heart of a lion.

RIP Harry.

He also went back to get a Yugoslavian lady (a politicians daughter if memory serves me) & her daughter out of the wreckage. He was indeed a hero on that day.
I was always proud that Man. Utd. paid Rovers a record fee for him.
Great keeper,great bloke. RIP Harry.

RIP Harry.

Some years ago I saw a wonderful documentary on Harry Gregg, where he went back to the airport in Munich where the disaster happened and then he met the family of the woman he rescued from the crash. I've never been able to find it again, but it was a fantastic piece of television and a great tribute to the man.

You needed to be up really early to catch them because Rovers did get a few mentions - but then got dropped from the later bulletins

Record signing was good enough for them. Amazingly though I dont remember I may have seen him in goal for us.

Just been reading his Wikipedia page. He had quite a sad life.  Lost his first wife to cancer. Lost a daughter to cancer.  Never won a major trophy missing out on a cup final and league title through injury
Only recognised in the honours list last year. Way too late

What a sad loss, never saw him play but my Dad enthused about him when he saw him. One of the real heroes. My condolences for his family.

Way before my time but I have grown up with tales of this great man
The term hero is used far too often with little substance but not in this case RIP

I just missed out on seeing him play for us. My first season was 1958 and I remember us losing mid-week to Hull City at home. One of the older Rovers fans was saying Harry was in the main stand watching. I think that his first wife was from Hyde Park so maybe business and pleasure for him visiting the in-laws.

And modesty smashed them 4-0 at home... once, almost 118 years ago. A hattrick from John Murphy and one from Billy Langham.

The talking up, or lack thereof, of Rovers doesn't matter, what does is that Harry Gregg is rightly lauded as an all-time great in British football and a hero off the field too.

Obviously I never saw him play but have always known of his importance to this club and to Manchester United. He was voted best GK at the World Cup only months after Munich, and it was also only months after he was a Rovers player.

It would be great to see a tribute at this weekend's game, not least because he managed our opponents Shrewsbury as well as playing for us.

A special figure in our history, RIP Harry.
