BBC Sport Celebrity Team Quiz
« on May 14, 2020, 05:39:55 pm by POD »
I’ve just completed the Quiz on the BBC Sport website which was 12 multiple choice questions relating to Celebrities and the teams which they followed.  I got 7/12, but one which I didn’t get was Paul Daniels, as apparently he was a supporter of his home town club Doncaster Rovers.
That seemed a mystery to me as I’d never heard of this before and thought he was from the North East?

Ive just done that quiz too. The difference being I DiD know that answer  ;) ;).
But if you read the info carefully it doesn't mention anything about "hometown club", so I don't know why you thought that ??

If I remember rightly it was all a stunt.
Mervyn O'Haran, I think that was his name, was a Rovers director at the time and was Daniels' manager.
Doubt whether the magician attended many games.

He lived in Doncaster. His “proper” name was Newton Edward Daniels.

Debbie McGee used to use the Barclays Bank in Doncaster, no doubt getting some more of his money, but not a lot. A lad who I used to know worked there and she would come in dressed to the nines.

I bought two squares of Rovers turf and when Belle Vue closed I went and got them and a red plastic flip up seat which I’ve got in my garden

If you get the answer wrong (which I did) it says that Doncaster was his hometown club.  If you get it right (which you did) it gives a different narrative

I was told years ago that Paul Daniels manager (I think) used to live on Cantley Lane opposite the junction to ascot avenue. Never knew if it was true though

One of my former long time customers, sadly now dead, used to do all his building work.
He certainly lived in Donny for a while and if I remember correctly after he became really famous he moved down South.
My builder friend did loads of work at his place down there too.

I seem to recall the publicity that Paul Daniels bought the centre spot at Belle Vue.

To bring a few of the responses above together, we covered Paul Daniels' association with the club on episode 12 of the fanzine podcast.

Paul Daniels was actually a Middlesbrough fan. However, his manager/agent was a former director of Doncaster Rovers. So in 1992 when the club sold off square yards of the Belle Vue pitch to raise some money they roped in Paul Daniels for a pit of publicity; cue loads pictures of Daniels in a Rovers scarf, and the resulting idea that he was a Rovers fan.

As part of that pitch sell-off Daniels bought the ten yards of turf around the centre spot. But sadly, when the club moved on he never got it. Presumably were he still alive he'd have every right to go and help himself to ten square yards of some newbuild's garden.
