John Philliben

greetings to all of you, remember John Philliben? He was mainly a central defender, I don't know if he also played as a full-back.

I can remember him absolutely wiping out a young centre forward who had been stolen off us by Sheffield United in an early season  game at Belle Vue that had their supporters going daft when he was not sent off
Looks like he runs a successful driving school in Sterling now.

Selby.

That was Stuart Beattie who flattened Brian Deane.

It led to the classic Raise The Roof headline "Stu-Boot-Deano".

A very good player for us. I was disappointed but not surprised when he left.

I think I'm right in saying it was a club record at the time.

Asked Glynn Snoddin once about John, he said he was a smashing lad but couldn't wait to go home to Scotland after every game.

Billy I have always been mistaken then, and always thought it was Philliben, I bow to your superior knowledge, he had a good career in Scotland after leaving us and played for a number of years after.
I met him on a holiday a few years back and he spoke of very fond memories of his time at Doncaster and his team mates of the time.

Played 71 games for us between 1984 and 1987 Think he was signed by Billy Bremner

Scored just 1 goal

Could be wrong memory not what it once was

What I wanted to say initially was why a post on John Philliben.
This one was a bit out of the blue.

A player I liked very much. An accomplished centre back.
With Dobbin & Buckley also, Bremner had a good eye for his fellow compatriots.

Yes he was a record signing. What would 60k in 1984 be today? I never thought he was worth that much tbh. John Buckley, however was a priceless signing. A McIndoe of the time.

Welcome to the forum as i see it is your first post.

I am curious as to why you posted about John Philliben.
It’s completely out of the blue.
Is there a specific reason?

I assume you are not John Marquis.!!!

I was ball boy v Plymouth on a Friday night. Think it was 84. 2 nil down at half time, we were 4-2up 20 mins into the second half.
Philliben scored an absolute thumping header, from a corner, at the Town End. Great player

Remember the game. It ended 4-3 to Rovers.
I think 4 goals were scored in around 9 mins in the 2nd half.
3 to Rovers & 1 to Plymouth if my memory serves me correctly
May have been all 4 to Rovers as you suggested.

I was sat at the town end where Rovers scored all their goals.
It was a crazy match.

I realise that we're having issues with the forum. Do other people see that as a full reply, or just "It"?

I see that my last post does not appear correctly, what I wanted to say is that thanks for the welcome and the answers, and that the reason for asking for Philliben is for a database of old players in which I am working.
