Let's talk about the Carlisle United game
« on November 25, 2020, 10:13:11 am by selby »
A cup game on a Sunday with a lunch time KO against a top six Division 2 side with a good home record having won 5 and lost 1 against Cheltenham in their last home league fixture and in Mellish have a player who knows where the net is.
Not the easiest tie we could have had pulled out of the hat, and I expect a difficult game and hopefully a more consistent display in the game itself, playing for just 45 minutes in a game is doing my nerves no good at all.
To keep an interest in cup football after Christmas this season, and the extra income with prize money on offer the simple fact is we have to win, being dumped out of the other two competitions at the earliest opportunity.
Team wise how we approach this game is a big question, personally I would go as strong as possible with few or no changes from the side on the field at the end of the Blackpool game.
I know the pitches in the league are all of a similar size with not much variation to speak of, but Carlisle always looks a big especially wide pitch when I have been there, with space in wide areas. Carlisle also always seem to have a free kick specialist who has a kick like a mule and usually scores from distance against us, but are a team I have always had a little soft spot for and we have had some really good tussles with them in the past.
Play well and we have every chance of progression, play well in two halves and it will be a revelation, play as bad as we have been in the first two halves of the last two games and we are in for a hard game, we cannot afford to be off our game at all.
Hopefully some of the walking wounded will be able to join the match day squad which will strengthen the bench but I would be cautious as to their introduction, Richards gaining from dipping his toe in a game and looked so much sharper and hungrier for it when coming on last night and produced a match winning performance.
Carlisle have been on their travels since the Cheltenham game beating Crawley 3-0 and losing last night 1-0 to Tranmere and are looking to at least reach the playoffs under manager Chris Beech who is slowly building a decent side.
So, the big question what would you do?
Would you make many changes or try to build s little consistency?
Is our new keeper available for this game? I honestly do not know the situation.
Is Darren's biggest job now instilling consistency of performance into our team? which has at times looked a very good unit with tallent, and at others totally disorganised and in poor form, and has as we we know reared their heads in the same game on more than one occasion.
Do you see it as important we progress in the FA cup?
Is it a game like me you would have gone to under normal circumstances?
Lot's to discuss about this game, please have your say, Carlisle fans welcome to join in the chat.

If Lumley doesn’t play then he’ll be going back to QPR because Jones will have 5 professional games and we can no longer have a emergency loan.
I would start the team that finished last night if all fit.
I would hope JJ, Taylor and Gomes are ready for the bench then get some minutes.
We need to try and keep a clean sheet but take chances at the other end.
I want to see more from Okenbirhie and hope he scores.

Good point re Lumley. For that reason I think he has to play.

I know things change over time, but even in local football before a player was eligible to play in a cup tie they had to be signed on with a club a certain number of days before being able to play in the competition.
Is this removed for an emergency keeper on loan? is it still arule? and if not has he been signed on the required length of time to be able to play?

I would be tempted to open with the 11 on the Pitch at FT last night - and add any comeback from injury guys on Bench

I hope we do go strong because we could do with a Cup run and the money generated from the last standing Team in the Division. Could do with crowds being back in in time for Round 4 and a big Team away at that point

So I DO think it is important to progress in FA Cup though I was at odds with many last time we discussed a Cup game v Wolves in EFL

The Club has been asking fans to help out by not taking refunds etc and those that could seem to have done so - so when there is a chance of more money without involving handouts the Club should take advantage if they can. I mean they might go strong and still no win but should be trying to go as far as possible imho

From EFL regulations for Emergency keepers

57.2.2  in respect of any other fixture:

(a)  12 noon on the day of the match; or

(b)  at least three hours before the match,

whichever is the earlier.

So we will be renewing his seven day loan so he should be able to play.

Did he not sign a 7 day rolling contract until the emergency loan ends

I want to see all the walking wounded back in the squad, if not in the team. This will be a good warm up for our upcoming fixture v Dull.

Please please pretty please can we play for both halves instead of just 1.

Yes but it still needs confirming every seven days I believe.?

As for Carlisle, we should go strong - it’s the fa cup and it’s important..  we have players coming back from injury hopefully so the squad is stronger..

You have to apply and reregister the Goal Keeper every seven days so he can continue to play.

Dean Furman was on the bench for Carlisle against Tranmere on Tuesday night.    He doesn’t seem to be getting much game time at the moment, but may get a run out in the FA Cup.

Always a 'hostile' place to visit as an away fan travelling by train.

A lovely journey on the Settle-Carlisle route, step off the train into a beautiful old railway station. The sun is shining, you're with other Rovers supporters, you fancy getting a result, it's a relatively short walk to the ground, you've got your colours on what could possibly go wrong?

You step out of the station & immediately to your right is a Wetherspoons 'festooned' with Carlisle supporters enjoying the sun & filled with lashings of ginger beer....I mean Stella & their 'welcome' begins.

Ah well.

Reading the Carlisle forum it is hard to make out what style of play we are likely to come up against.
One contributor seems to be pleased they are a much more physical team that plays the long ball game with some success, and another moaning that they played good passing football at Crawley resulting in a 3-0 away win last weekend, but losing 1-0 at Tranmere on Tuesday playing a much more basic style.
Most accept they are a physical big side, so we don't want to be dragged into playing their type of game, like we were at Oldham in the other cup competition, they are way above Bradford and Oldham in the top half of Division 2 and both those teams gave us all the trouble we wanted in those two games.
With us in a Tier 3 area playing in front of spectators is going to be a while, so winning this tye, and having a chance to go even further with the chance of much needed prize money has just become a little more important.

Listening to Darren's post match comments after the Blackpool game, he admits the first half was way below what he expected of Rovers, too slow, no urgency, so at half time he addressed those points with the team, told them what to do, and try to get an early goal, in the hope we could press forward for a second goal and get back in the game.
Wonder if he expected the outcome of that second half to be as it was.
At least he knows what to drill into the lads at Carlisle, move the ball much quicker, let's get on the front foot and shove them back, and also taking into account Selby's comments from their forum, be wary of the counter attack long ball over the top.

One other statement that slightly perturbed me was a comment of a supporter liking the fact that they had a team that was adept at the use of what he called the lower leagues dark arts, something that with a young side like ours, and a few players who are in their first years away from academy football who might just come up against things they have not come up against before and will have to grow up fast.

I think they had a good introduction to the dark arts on Tuesday night.

No tinkering for me, keep the continuity, start with the team that finished against Blackpool, take the game to them from the off. Need to get through & get some much needed money.

Reading the article by in Free Press there’s only JJ and Gomes with a chance to be part of the squad.
So therefore the team that finished must be the team to start. Hopefully we will have JJ and Gomes on the bench. Taylor will not be risked he could be ready for Wednesday.

They have a good home record this season. Played 8 in all competitions, won 6 and lost 2. One of those losses was very first game of season and the other loss was by a single goal. In previous round they struggled to beat non-league Hayes and Yeading away, 4-3 on penalties.

Carlisle have been a regular bogey team for us.

Since we beat them home and away with Bremner's 90/91 nearly-all conquering team, our record is.

Didn’t we beat them at home in 2007/8 with a very late winner off Hayter’s arse from about a gnat’s cock length away from goal.?

If you go on iplayer, on the home screen, there is a fa cup section with 4 or 5 live games,  one click and you are good to go....

We did.

We also best them 1-0 at their place not far off 17 years ago to the day, in THE windiest conditions I've ever seen a game played in. One of Andy Warrington's goal kicks never made it out of the area.

Saw Gary Woods do that several times.
