Joe has been a bit of an enigma to me.  When he first made the team I thought he could be premier league within 2 or 3 years but he probably hasn’t developed as fast as I thought.  His mobility and use of the ball were I thought his weakest areas- what is a bit surprising to me is that he has shown these qualities when playing full back in recent games.  I don’t think he could ever be PL quality at full back because he hasn’t got the speed but it might indicate that he could play yet CB at a much higher level.

With Preston reportedly only getting initial 500k for Davies and rest in add ons , it makes the contract Ben signed look even better business now

I think Joe has been unlucky with injuries that was my only question mark next to him. Think he’s slotted into right back brilliantly

Well, the window is now firmly shut so no one is taking Joe anywhere until summer.

It shuts at 11 tonight..

Ah, I thought it was 31st January.

I think he's also showed flashes of what a good footballer his is. We've always known he was good with the ball however, some of the little tricks he's shown on the flank have been great to watch.

It's highly likely he'll regain his centre half spot sooner or later and he might be encouraged to bring the ball forward more frequently (as long as there's cover in behind of course) as making those runs opens up the opposition.

Anyway, centre halves generally reach their peak as they mature in years (and they get less bothered about their looks) so I hope we see much more and the best of Joe as the season progresses. He had a good run without injury up to this minor one so let's hope that continues. I'm sure DM understands his value to the club and that will be dealt with in due course.

I could be wrong but I think it's the first Monday after, i.e. today.

Preston signed defender Liam Lindsay from Stoke on loan. Hopefully this means they have no longer interest in Joe.

Did they have any interest in him at all. Wasn’t it just a load of dosh doing the rounds on social media.

Very likely indeed Campsall

Edit: Preston now signed another defender on loan from Liverpool

I think we can sleep easy now

No, it wasn’t a load of dosh, it was two reports suggesting that Preston were preparing to put in an offer for Joe, having watched him when monitoring BW. The report didn’t say they had bid, just preparing to bid. Other people have made their minds up what spin they want to put on that information.

SM said some time ago that we’d had no contact from Preston, so I presume the negotiations with Liverpool opened up when they offered a loan as part ex. They had obviously also scouted the Stoke lad.

I'm confident the club would have knocked back any enquiry anyway.

Davies went from a decent championship side to the current premier league champions - at age 25 - for £2m only.  Even with the current financial situation in football that is very very cheap.

I believe his contract was about to expire in the summer though.

His contract was up in the summer, he actually went for an initial £500,000 with the rest paid as add ons. Good luck to the lad.

Even so, that’s still cheap.. we would have got a shit offer for Joe if they had come knocking.

Hopefully we will see Joe (and others) finalising new deals soon.  They are supposed to be talking now, aren’t they.?

That's what I meant about Ben W signing a new contract with us ,  if you only get 500 k from Liverpool up front , for a championship defender , what would we have got in same position?  We've done really good business all the way through , with credit to Ben for his part in it
