Let's talk about the Lincoln City game
« on January 27, 2021, 12:39:31 am by selby »
Wow just Wow, what a game in prospect a head to head game that  goes back in my mind and brings back memories of the realisation that the Snodins were special, I wished we had Percy Freeman playing for us at the time, and can this be another Mansfield moment, can Fey be the new Greg, can Richards be the new Greeny, it seems like one of those moments when our team needs to cement their names in our minds for ever just like our heroes of the past.
And to do it they need to go full on with another very good side in Lincoln filled with adversaries we have come up against before, like Bridcutt, Hopper, Grant, all good players we have crossed swords with before and know are players to be respected good pros  along with new names on loan from Manchester City, the academy of really good young players such as Morgan Rogers who scored the winner at Portsmouth to keep them in the top spot in Division1.
Then there is our team, who have for me played some of their best football of the season v Wimbledon, but even then had a period just after half time like they had changed places with someone else for twenty minutes and we looked slightly rocky for that period before gaining superiority once again and showed how good we could be nearing the end of the game.
At Portsmouth Lincoln were aided by the Portsmouth player Watmough being sent off early in the game finishing off a great week for himself and his team having scored two own goals in the previous game v Hull at the weekend, and is top of the popularity charts of the Portsmouth faithful.
Lincoln however have never been far off the top all season up to press, are very consistent in getting good solid results, and have shown in televised cup games that when needed they can raise their game against top sides, a hard game and task to overcome them lies ahead.
On the commentary last night Copps regularly used the word Brilliant  and some of the individual skills he referred to were just that brilliant, can we replicate it against better opposition this weekend?
Will our team be able to showcase those skills against the top side in the division?
Will we defend what we have ( a point) at the start of the game, or go flat out to make a statement we are here on merit?
Will our new player be let off the leash in this game?
Are you expecting Lincoln to go for our throat from the off and attack us?
Are you like me gutted not to be there at a game that surely would have filled the ground with supporters of both teams?
Are you like me starting to become frustrated with missing games in a season that in future will be remembered for all the wrong reasons?
There are so many things to talk about and discuss about this game that will have the nerves jangling at the weekend of both sets of supporters, an old rivalry raising it's head once again that has a history going back to the old division 3 North, Please feel free to have your say, any Lincoln fans also very welcome, I can't wait.

Lincoln City. Sincil Bank. The names are synonymous with extravagant cheating and bent refereeing.

The self same Percy Freeman once deliberately ran smack into Kim Book as Kim was gathering the ball from a hopeless punt upfield. Just barged straight into him he did. Kim fell over. The wrong side of the goal line. Goal awarded.  Ref clearly nobbled.

Evening match about 25 years ago. Ref even more clearly nobbled. Sent off 2 of our blokes in the first 45 minutes for no discernible reason. A well known, (and very well respected) watching Doncaster JP was so incensed that he climbed the pitchside barrier at half time, accosted the referee and then stomped off to the office of the Lincoln club secretary and demanded his gate money back - on the grounds that he had paid to watch 2 teams of eleven men, not one of 11, one of 9 and a monkey dressed in black.

And of course, the never to be forgotten infamy of John Beck. A cultured and high class midfielder in his day. And an unmitigated cheat as a manager. For those who don't remember, or who were too young, try this: a brick down each goal post hole at one end of Sincil Bank and instructions to his team to take long range pot shots when they were shooting towards that end. He only got found out because the pre match warm up of an opposition goalie (sadly, I forget who now) included jumping up to touch the cross bar. Only this time he found he struggled to reach it. Ended up with the ref measuring the height of the goal and then demanding the immediate attendance of the Lincoln City groundsman to investigate! He was sacked in 1997 or 1998.

Lincoln City. Sincil Bank. A long history of cheats and cheating.

Hardly time for us to catch our breath - or the players! Certainly, the game of the day and it’s anyone’s guess how this is going to turn out. Honestly, I’d take a draw now and maybe even a 0-0. My only concern is the threadbare nature of the squad (still). The bench was, to say the least, a bit lightweight last night and that simply has to be rectified before Saturday.

I’m hoping Gomes is back in contention, to, at least, occupy one of the spots and maybe with a bit of luck, Bostock.

We would hope all the eleven who started last night are fit and ready to go again. The bench will hopefully look different. Will Copps, Gomes, Lokilo, Bostock, new striker? be available.

A few WOWS there Bob, and nice to see you don't hold a grudge for long.
You have got me hoping we can feign a hotly disputed penalty and come away making their fans feel robbed (by the way I would take that no bother).

Well with living in Lincoln, this has been stoked up by Imps fans as the game of all games. I THINK we’ve beaten them in the last four first team matches, but they’re a completely different team now. Counter attacking at pace with Bridcutt holding things together at the back. Montsma ( CH) comes up for set pieces and is very well thought of. Their back room staff are ex WBA.... sound familiar?  Jorge Grant is their main striker and has an endless feed to him by midfielders. They too like to play out from the back as we do and it’s all set up nicely. To say I’m gutted that we can’t be there is the understatement of the season. Half my family are Imps, with the clever half being Donny STH. I’ll update what the locals are saying closer to the time. RTID.

The pitch is likely to be shocking. It was called off there a week or so ago due to a waterlogged pitch, more heavy rain forecast tomorrow and light rain on Friday. It’s probably still recovering from recent snow melt also.

What about the blatant obstruction on Andy Warrington at Belle Vue in January 2004 which Lincoln scored from and subsequently won.
It was the first time I had stood at the town end since the early eighties so i was stood right behind the goal.
My step son nicked my main stand terrace season ticket for that match. I also got a right drenching as it rained all through the match.

Chap with double barrelled name scored also played for Blackpool later. For the life of me I cannot remember his name. Someone on here will I am sure.

One of only 2 home defeats all season. The other Yeovil of course back in early Sept.
Guess which two, the only two games my stepson went to that season. Yes you guessed it.
I have tried to ban him since then. His record when attending since then is still awful.

We were foaming about that decision and we were near the half way line.
Couldn't believe the ref not giving the foul.

Taylor-Fletcher was the player. Just came to me in a horrible flash while i was thinking why the ref or linesman could not see the foul.

Yes, I think that was the second wettest Rovers game for me at Belle Vue, also stood on the Town end. Just a bloody awful night especially having persuaded some mates to come along. Not amused.

The wettest being the Real Sociedad storm but at least that was warm rain!

Tough game,
we should be happy with a draw, a loss won’t kill us ( depends how we lose of course)
But a win is what our team are going for .....

1-2

They stuffed us 4-0 at BV one Boxing Day too. Denis dropped a clanger for the first.... But they were a good side that year and we'd all had too much Christmas pud.

After the 0-0 draw at SB earlier that season it meant Lincoln were the only team we didn't score against in the league that season.

Hard hat on, Warrington was at fault for not clearing out all and sundry when the ball was higher.

It must have been around that time BB. I have no idea for sure, but both were a bloody long time ago!  If it was Graham Taylor's team they romped the league that season. Bloody effective side they were. Didnt they get a record points total?

Nearly the half-way point of our season and should show us how we are progressing and if Lincoln are promoting material , because we are a  organised team with a similar current form record and haven’t beaten us since 2004 .

I think Lincoln are promotion material unless they have a catastrophe due to injuries.

They have played a fair few of the other top half teams and on paper, they have an easier run in than most of the top ten.

All of that is right, Bob, and I was there that Boxing Day. However, it wasn't 0-4, it was 2-4.

2-4 wasn't it?
Brendan o'callaghan flattened their keeper and got booked
Avoided big Bren like the plague after that
Miller scored the other with a belting left foot shot about 25 yards out

Don't worry about getting on a bit, Bob, you're in good company with Wolfie and BB.

I suppose I'll have to face it in about 30 years time.

We have only played them twice since 2004 in the League. Last season and this season both at home.
