I’m not ignoring it,
A strong squad compared to what?
Germany’s? Spain’s? Portugal’s?

That squad consists of only 1/2 players who play regularly in the prem,
That’s not the case for other countries

Compared to Croatia and Switzerland for starters, both of whom finished above us.

Of that squad, Ramsdale, Godfrey, Davies, Eze, Gallagher, Jones, McNeil, Brewster and Smith-Rowe have all had a decent amount of game time at PL clubs this season. Also, Aarons and Cantwell did so with Norwich last season. Outside of England, Sessegnon and, to a lesser extent, Madueke have a decent amount of minutes in Germany and Holland. It was a strong squad by anyone's standards.

If you look through history our under 21s never do well, not won anything other than the Toulon tournament under boothroyd for 40 years.
Look at the players we’ve had over that time,
Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Owen, Fowler, terry, Cole, Rooney,
And we’ve won nothing

If you looks through the history our under 21s have won the highest honour in the game, the UEFA u21 title, twice and have been runners up, all within the last 40 years.

That right, 37 years, so within the last 40.

Good performance in 2009 to make the final and lose only to Germany side including Ozil, Neuer, Boateng, Hummels and Khedira.

Right so read my post again but change 40 years to 37.
Point still stands,

No under 21 manager has won anything for a very long time, so it’s harsh to use that as a criticism of boothroyd

Surely you can see the difference between two successive group stage exits and finishing as runners up, for instance. Saying no U21 manager has won the competition outright, therefore they must all be judged identically is quite strange.

I’m not but surely you can also see that winning the Toulon tournament under him should also be recognised when nobody else has managed that feat in 37 years
The current England manager didn’t win anything with the under 21 for instance

Anyhow hopefully it’s not going to be him

We won the Toulon Tournament in 2016 under Southgate and 2017 under Dewsnip, but let's leave that there.

You've got me there!

I just think it’s a job with very little chance of being successful and I think the role is more about bringing players through.
Whether they have an influence on that or not could be debatable

I agree it's a tough job given that the squad changes substantially every tournament cycle. I think we're generally in agreement regarding Boothroyd though (i.e. much preferring other options!).

Plus not forgetting there's been a number of tournaments we're top under 21 players have been withdrawn by there clubs or call into Englands first team squad for tournaments or end of season games

I think I’ve now convinced myself I want wellens,

I think if we let him build a squad he’ll fill it with good players,
He plays attractive football, and I imagine he’s not one to take any nonsense from players, the lack of professionalism we’ve seen over the last few weeks, he wouldn’t stand for that.

I’d be delighted if we got him

Of the names yet to be ruled out, I'd be happy with Wellens, Simon Weaver or Stephen Robinson. I wouldn't be unhappy with Graeme Jones either in all honesty.

I still believe there's going to be one or two candidates who have completely slipped under the radar.

Just to chuck a name in,

Martin Allen?

Almost everyone who has played for him has good things to say about him. Managed at a higher level. Good at building team spirit.

Just have a listen to his interview on Undr the Cosh. He'd have the players ready to run through brick walls.

Admittedly he doesn't play the style of football we've played in recent years, but may be just what we need.

I can see the thought process given what a bunch of invertebrates we have had this season, but Allen is from the footballing stone age.

I wouldn't be disappointed with any of those names either. I'd probably lean towards Wellens most.

Of the under the radar names, has Steve Evans been ruled out yet?

Is there anything at all that Steve Evans could get under never mind the radar? ;)

Read what SM wrote - Post 462. I am entirely relaxed about Mr Boothroyd.

BobG

Wellens won't be manager. Sure I saw something similar. Maybe wrong though.

Liam Hoden confirmed Wellens is on the shortlist. He has to be classed as a leading contender to get the job.

Me too! FFS! I’d rather have Dickov back and have successive relegations than have that fat, whingeing, abusive, corrupt excuse for a human being anywhere near our club!

I will buy another ST even after this years collapse, bought one after the ‘experiment’, bought one every year for the last 20 years. If that Cnut becomes our manager I won’t buy one until he leaves! No f*ck*ng way, f*ck off! I’m sure the board would think the same. :boxing:

Same for me. And I’d also be happy with Graeme Jones.

I was on team Wellens, then that first half showing pushed me further into wanting Wellens to get it.

However, I read on another post that there's 2 or 3 of the candidates who aren't on the bookies. My initial thought was Kenny Jackett and the Cowleys.

Wellens still my personal prefered number 1 target

What I don't understand with wellens is the attraction to him. Yep great player for this club, yep did well for Swinton in LG 2. But that's about it, jumped fir a big money move to his mates and failed there. Seems very much like alot of our old managers plus I'm not sure what, if any connections he has in the game.

Graham Jones, if applied is an interesting one. Another ex rover, struggled at Luton, good connections in the game at all levels. equally strong characters which is going back to Darren  fergusons days. I'd say highly rated and poss waiting for a championship club role rather than rovers

Wellens didn’t fail at Salford.
