Random question - tree cutting

Does anyone know if your ok to cut down a tree on your property (front garden) please?

I was pretty sure it’s ok but someone today has put a doubt in my mind that I might need to seek permission!

Don’t really know, but I would think it probably depends on the tree and how mature it is

   In some instances I have known people who have not been able to cut down trees on their property, in most instances builders have to ask for permission, I would ask your local council.
   Certainly in one case it was a neighbour who objected after the event and it was the fact that they went ahead that got them into hot water not the fact they had felled the tree.

It depends on what kind of tree it is, the thickness of it's trunk (maturity), whether there is a tree protection order (TPO) in place on it, and where you live, as the rules change if you're in a conservation area - where I believe you need to get approval regardless of whether there is a TPO in place on a specific tree.

I've been looking into it recently as I've got a couple of trees I want to get rid of, and my neighbour's trees are growing beyond his boundary and over my property. Normally I'd be legally entitled to cut them back to the boundary line, but because I'm in a conservation area I need to apply for approval etc to do it.

Planning on speaking to the council about it when the time is right, they have, what I believe are referred to us "Tree and Hedgerow Officers" or something similar who you can talk to about it.

I also live in a conservation area and yes, the rules on tree pruning and removal are very strict.
Sometimes the TPO prevents anything being done to the tree.
Failure to comply or go ahead regardless can result in significant fines.

It’s only a thin tree in the front garden of an estate around 20 years old. I’m very doubtful it’s protected due to its age etc

I will do some more digging on it.

If there is a Tree Preservation Order in place, then it could well be protected and any works require planning permission.  If the house is in a conservation area, then all trees over a certain trunk size are treated as if they are covered by a TPO.

If in doubt, always speak to the planning department at your local Council.

Sorry, mate. Should have done more than skim-read the thread. Saw the topic and still had the TPO on my desk that I’d been advising clients on this morning.
