Let's talk about the Walsall game
« on August 08, 2021, 03:02:50 pm by selby »
After a disappointing result yesterday when not a lot went right for us, including drawing an incompetent set of officials, we go on to play our usual away game in the EFL cup, which has been a game that we rarely have had any joy in, or made any much needed prize money  the   last time was probably when we had a day out at the Arsenal.
It is also the start of three away games with Sheffield Wednesday and Accrington places where we rarely do well, although the Wednesday away fixture lately has been better looming after this game, and a nightmare start to the season a distinct possibility.
Personally I would go in at the deep end and start with the same line up considered our best available yesterday lunch time and go all out to try and win the game and get some confidence and something to build on in the game Tuesday, also a game at a place where recently we have performed poorly and lost the most recent games.
I know our squad is thin, and any more injuries would be major problems, but now is not the time to think we are good enough to chop and change the side a lot, they need games under the belt, and to form some pattern of play in games, we are undercooked as a side and are starting behind in our team building they need to play games in my opinion.
This game will not be easy, in fact if I was a lower league team manager I would view it as one of the easiest to get a result in and a free pass to a potential bigger draw you could have  in cup football.
Walsall have some very experienced players who have been around the block in Labadi, Mills and Kiernan and after losing 1-0 at Tranmere yesterday will also be hoping for better things in front of their own fans and to get their season away.
As I have said and tried to point out, this game carries more importance for the club than just another cup game, in my mind we have to go full out for a win and play what we consider our strongest side.
What do you think it is?
  Would you start Bostock,
If so who would you leave out?
Are you going to the game?
Lots to discuss about this game, please have your say.

Several players need to do a lot better
In no particular order

Close corners poor no control generally ineffective

Williams/Anderson distribution poor caught in possession too slow I would replace one of them with John

Rowe ineffective

Cukur too slow didn't read the play very well

I thought that only ones who came out with credit were Knoyle and Seaman

Bogle hat trick. Thought I would get that one in because I know you think he is the best striker outside the Premier League.

if you make the assumption Harrogate are the same standard as Walsall

then expect a similar result and who is saddled with scoring will be.

Could even get Sadler on loan from Rodderham ??

This bunch need game time together but the trouble is we risk more injury setbacks, which we can I’ll afford, as we have very little back-up!

We have to get players in - it’s the only thing we can do!

From Adam Oxley at radio Sheffield:

#drfc boss Richie Wellens says the defeat to AFC Wimbledon was worse than he thought after re-watching the game; “chalk & cheese” to training on Friday. RW admits his squad needs depth, irrespective of what happened at the weekend, but finance still an issue.

Need anyone say more!

as i said before i expect decent cup runs in every competition which means doing a Lincoln - they played strong teams in every competition last season and have by chance spent £250,000 on improving the pitch.

Bentley Bullet obviously  thinks so and can't handle the extra works associated with the P & O competition by restricting it to league games.

Cup competitions can certainly be a good income stream for a club in our position, but we have a habit of not doing particularly well in them.
It looks like the opportune time to start taking them seriously both to stir some interest in the club from fringe supporters and for the obvious monetary rewards.
The team sheet tomorrow night will show the managements attitude, or are we going to have the requisite I picked a team to win the match, statement that other managers we have had when they have clearly not done after we have lost to such as Notts County and Grimsby who also picked weakened sides.

Cameron John is a big doubt for the game with a back issue Tommy Rowe is managing an Achilles problem which meant he did not train today also Bogle as a calf problem but it should not stop both being available all other  players are available. John Bostock should start tomorrow having getting more fitness after his long bout of Covid.
Richie as also said the squad needs depth but it is a financial issue.

Well we won even if it was on penalties and that is what counts.

Confidence comes from winning.

We dominated the whole second half.  All we need is someone to pot these chances away

Gardner, Williams & Cukur all missed their penalties.

Head case Greaves sent off after only 16 minutes.

Bostock injured second half.

Great that we’re in the 2nd round, but at what cost?

And headcase Greaves is with us on our budget all season because somebody who knows nothing about league 1 football gave him another year in April

Bostock was on the pitch at the end celebrating with the lads. Looked precautionary to me

Fingers and toes are crossed that bringing Bostock off was precautionary.

With Rowe and Bogle both carrying injury problems, the last thing we need is Bostock out for a period! No Smith either tonight!

Elsewhere - Wimbledon won away again and Accrington beat Rotherham.
