Happy memories.
I realised tonight it’s just a shade over 20 years since that epic night at York Street. Boston United v Rovers. Two teams vying for top slot in the conf
A very forgettable first half, but wow. What a second 49 minutes. The stoppage time was quite important of course for United.
The turning point for the match was Kelly getting sent off after bagging both rovers goals. Boston had a couple of very strong peno decisions ignored.
The enigmatic Daryl Clare popped up with two goals in 90 and 90+ 4 for a share of the spoils.
A truly memorable footy match. End to end stuff. And a great rivalry between the two clubs for a few fleeting years.
Happy days.

Loads of good memories from them days. Obviously I would rather be up the divisions than back down there.

Happy days...didn't the supporters coach get roughed up by their fans?  & didn't someone take a swing at Daryl Clare as he ran past the Rovers fans, goading them after his equaliser?

I think that was Justin Jackson's surprise debut as well, wasn't it?

His debut may have been a surprise but then again so was every subsequent appearance - surprise as in is this guy really a professional footballer.

Compared to Alford he was Eusebio, Greaves, Pele, Messi, Ronaldo all wrapped up in one.

I was there and yes it was. They battered us after the sending off.

Ahh Daryl Clare the original Kitson. He wasnt goading us after the penalty shoot out at Chester though was he? Tears streaming down his face. Shame.

Didn't he cost £150k as well? At the time unthinkable money for a Conference club.

Having witnessed him in action, it's still unthinkable now.

That was a night eh!
Remember several rovers swinging out as Clare ran past the away end wall. A few more inches and somebody would've connected with the cocky little t**t!

The much maligned Barry Richardson had a blinder that night.
We were robbed imo.

Justin Jackson cost £99.999 JR did not want to put him under any undue pressure.

Just kidding, i am pretty sure JR said he cot 100k
Our 1st ever 100k transfer fee paid.  Think he repaid about £49.99 of that fee.
£49.98 more than Carl Alford though.

How much did Alford cost, does any one remember, As I can’t.

When you consider within a few short years we'd signed;
Copps for 30k
Blundell for 25k (I think?)
O'Connor for 150k
Stock for 100-150k
Wellens for nowt

That Jackson fee must surely be the worst money we ever spent. Granted I was too young to remember much of Alford's time, beyond a name that generated much tutting and head shaking in the Dome bar before the game.

By the time we have finished paying bogles wages, I reckon he would be in contention too.

The crazy thing is Alford scored more than 60 goals in the 2 previous seasons for Stevenage in the Conference It is not as if he even jumped up two leagues, he had not even gone up one.

Hero to zero overnight. Quite unbelievable.

Remember Peter Wetzel telling us waiting for that badly late KO at Halewsowen Town that they'd just bought this stunning new striker called Gary Williams for £60K and he was gonna be a star. Wasn't JR also quoted saying Andy Watson would be the first £1M conference player...

We got out of the Conference because we were the Man Utd of the league, and spent accordingly. There is no other alternative if you want success.

Andy Watson was a great player and would have been an absolute steal for the pennies we paid for him. He got lost though. Easy to try and blame Snodin.

I think Andy Watson was a pretty good player but Gary Williams certainly wasn't.
